Mural sketch May 10 2004

This 22" X 41" mural preparatory sketch was made at a Longmead Art lesson in slightly less than 2 hours.

The main thing being learned here, is the application of paint to represent the "leaves". This was acheived through using a crumpled up plastic bag touched flatly upon the paint pallate. The pattern of ridges gives a printed appearence not dissimilar to that which is made by a plastic scouring pad, (as described in the Redhill Common Tree Circle painting lesson), but on a much bigger scale.

Fireplace Sketch 4 July 2004

This (ephemeral) fireplace mural sketch, was a pragmatic demonstration of what, a mess can be made on peoples walls, with a lump of fake coal.

Apparently it is still there.

Mural Sketcch, 7 July 2004

This is the experimental first stage of an imaginary landscape painting.

It is being painted at NHS Surrey Oaklands ArtMatters for the possible inclusion into an office rental scheme..

ArtMatters 14 July

In the second session, it was attempted to print some leaves onto the sketch with a "crumpled up" plastic bag.
My Brother (who happens to live nearby) "knocked me up" a few board to play with at ArtMatters.
ArtMatters 21 July 2004

My painting efforts have been noticed by others. On this session at ArtMatters, there were two surprises waiting for me.

The flowerpot box (pictured left), shows a CraftMatters box further decorated, by overprinting with a crumpled up plastic bag. This further application was inspired by my part in the painting session, 14 July 2004.

The picture on the right, is a surprise "institutional" gift. This will pay for my dinner in future.

On the third session, a sign writers line brush was utilised for "trees and branches". At this point I am struggling with painting depth.

It is intended to bring out "depth" using; successive layers, of "brushed" trees, overlayed with leaves, printed with a crumpled plasic bag"".

ArtMatters 28 July 2004

This session was spent mainly on preparing the first of my brothers boards (pictured center).

This is for the painting my first "proper" ArtMatters sketch..

At the sessions end.an application of some more trunkwork was attempted.

It looks like there should be some branches coming from the sides, about a third of the way down, from the top.

ArtMatters 4 August 2004

For the second painting a willow reflected on water was chosen.

This sketch is painted on frame backed hardboard with the rough side outermost.

It is intended to subsequently "add" waterlillies.

On the session 1 September I started adding imaginary water lillies. The 3 hour session per week isn`t really enough. My brother lives 50 yards away. The board was taken there.

At the session 7 September there was an attempt made to add lilly flowers.

The willow and sky "reflection" was darkened slightly. Lilly clumps going off the side of the painting, will hopefull help add to the illusion of depth.

It was thought that the lilly leaves added at the foreground were obviously too small. Those leaves (and flowers) were over painted with more appropriately sized leaves.

At ArtMatters Sept 22, some "pink" lilly flowers were added to the foreground "pads" [shown left].

The"moat bank" at the right of the picture was moved back a bit. Hopefully this space will accomodate the bullrushes.
