The "Establishment" shop window on Reigate High Street was sketched just before the occurrence of the apparent total solar eclipse visible from Cornwall. It is a study to try and represent three layers within one.I am sitting on a bench within an archway of the Old Town Hall in Reigate. The other side of High St. is behind me. Primarily, there is the unobscured directly viewed area of the shop window frame at the bottom and left of sketch. The compound window image within the frame took a lot of thought. It was attempted by shading the shop display items lightly at first. I then "drew" in the lighter areas of the reflection superimposed onto the dark shop display areas with a thin slice of clean pencil eraser. Again drawing lightly, I then penciled in the reflection details over the light areas of the background shop display. Then with a bit more emphasis, drew in darker areas on both the reflection and shop display. Then on the right of the picture "drew" in the reflection of the mortar between the bricks on the areas of dark shop display using a sharp slice of pencil eraser, as well as faintly drawing in the bricks on the lighter areas of the display background.. |
