Drugs in CVS.

b- blockers: Blockade of b1 adrenoreceptors is negatively inotropic and chronotropic, and delays AV conduction. Blocked of b2 receptors causes coronary and peripheral vasoconstriction and bronchoconstriction. b1 receptors are atenolol, metoprolol etc.

b- blockers are used to diminish myocardial oxygen demand in coronary artery disease, to control hypertension and certain arrhythmias, and beneficial effect prophylactically following an MI

CI: asthma, obstructive airway disease, claudication, and heart failure/heart block

SE: nightmares, depression, decreased glucose tolerance, lethargy, impotence, and headache etc.

Diuretics: used in hypertension and heart failure.SE: frusemide: hypokalaemia, ototoxicity. Thiazides: hypokalaemia, hypomagnesaemia, ­ glucose and ¯ platelets

Vasodilators: ¯ BP in hypertension, decrease the work of the heart in heart failure and coronary artery disease.

Venodilators: nitrates, arterial dilators: hydralazine

ACE inhibitors also act by vasodilation.

SE: hypotension and dizziness.

Aspirin: prevents blood clotting

GI upset and black stool.
