Ashby, a large and
pleasant village on a gentle acclivity, 7 miles W.by N. of Brigg,
on the road to Burringham Ferry, has in its township 2105 acres
of land, extending over the western ridge of the wolds to the river
Trent, where there is a large extent of low sterile moory land,
now undergoing a fertilizing system of warpage, and where there
is still a large Decoy (9 miles W. of Brigg,) abounding in wild
Ducks and other aquatic birds, and having near it a handsome mansion,
called Decoy Cottage, built in 1841, by its owner and occupier,
Hy. Healey Esq. Among other proprietors of the soil are, Wm.
Skipworth, Esq., lord of the manor; W.C.W. Clark, Esq., and
the Campbell, Chatterton, Keyworth, Everatt, Smith, and other families.
The great tithes are held by the trustees of the late J. Calah,
Esq., and the vicar has 44 acres allotted at the enclosure.
The Wesleyan and Primitive Methodists have each a chapel here.
