West Halton and Gunhouse, an extract from Whites Gazeteer and directory of Lincolnshire 1842

HALTON, (WEST,) a village pleasantly situated in a vale, on the banks of a rivulet, between Aukborough Hill and another ridge of the Wolds, 4 miles N.N.E. of Burton Stather, and 2. 1/2 miles N. of Whitton-on-the-Humber, has in its parish 359 souls, and 2942A, 2R. of land, including most of the hamlet of Coleby, (which is 1 mile S. of the village, and is partly on Burton parish;) and also the detached hamlet and chapelry of GUNHOUSE, which is situated on the Trent, opposite Kealby, 5 miles S. of Burton Stather, and has 126 inhabitants including a suburb which is in Scunthorpe township. Samuel Slater, Esq. is lord of the manor of  West Halton, as lessee under the Dean and Chapter of Westminster; and the other principal landowner is Thos. Oldman, Esq.; but here are several smaller freeholders and copyholders.
