Roxby

Index of villages

Here is a  school, supported by subscription, for the education of the poor.  in 1709, a roman tessellated pavement, six or seven yards broad, was found in a field south-west of the church, and may now be seen in Mr. F. Robinsons Farmyard.  It is in good preservation, composed of red, blue and white tessere, disposed in various figures.  Roxby was undoubtedly of some consequence to the Romans, being in a commanding situation near their road from Lincoln to Winteringham on the Humber.  The long levers and buckets of  the Roxby wells, resemble the primitive machinery used by the Egyptians, the Chinese, and other ancient nations, for drawing water.
