In the northern part of the state, is the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad. A joint effort by the states of New Mexico and Colorado to save a part of old railroad past. This 64 mile stretch between Antonito, Colorado, and Chama, New Mexico, was purchased by the two states after the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad petitioned to abandon.

This narrow gauge line, constructed in the late 1880's, ran from Denver to Silverton, Colorado. While the western end, the Durango-Silverton portion carries more famous, it does not offer the diversity of scenery, or cordiality of the Cumbres & Toltec train.

From Chama, the train chugs to the 10,015 ft Cumbres Pass, then wends its way across Alpine meadows through the Toltec Gorge, through a 300 foot tunnel, and down into the desert of southern Colorado and into Antonito, Colorado. The train crosses the New Mexico, Colorado state line eleven times. cumbres2
