DRAMA REVIEWS !!!

** Majo no Jouken - Terms for a Witch **

Featuring beautiful Nanako Matsushima and the young Hideaki Takizawa, Terms for a Witch (Majo no Joken) portrays the prohibited love between a 26-year old school teacher and her 17-year old student.
When this drama was first broadcasted, it stirred a huge controversy in Japan with mothers being outraged by the story line. They were worried that school teachers would start seducing their sons in schools after watching the series. And who wouldn't be tempted if teachers are as beautiful as Nanako Matsushima? Inspire of the controversy, the series was very popular and it went on to receive the highest rating in 1999.

This controversial drama appears to be inspired by the true story of an American teacher and her student. The story is beautifully executed with meaningful dialogues. Credits should also be given to the theme song "First Love" sung by Hikaru Utada.

In all her 26 years of life, Michi has been conforming to the expectations of her father, colleagues, friends and society. Whether it is her career or her marriage, Michi has not once thought about what she really wants. That is until Hikaru, a 17-year old boy frustrated by his home life with his single mother and having been expelled from many high schools for bad behavior, enters Michi's class as a new transfer student.

As their relationship grows, they realize that they both feel that they have lost themselves to the pressures of those around them, and it is this common bond that draws them dangerously close.

What follows is a heart-wrenching story of forbidden love where Michi must face society's judgment for corrupting a minor, abandoning her fiance, and disappointing her parents and co-workers.

Interesting lines from the drama:

"Keeping one close to your side is not love.

Sometimes letting go is also the form of love."

"Freedom is about understanding your reason for living."
