Board defers decision on the Firearms Ordinance until the May 22nd meeting
of the Public Safety Committee. The Board heard from Village residents who accurately
identified that this proposed ordinance was redundant with Illinois Law. The
May 22, 2001 meeting will also allow public comment, plan to be there at
6:30 PM and let them know that "Feel Good" laws are bad
laws.

Northbrook
Village Board calls for Public Hearing on Firearm Regulations. The Public
Hearing is scheduled for April 24th at 7:30 PM at the Village Hall. This is a correction from March Northbrook
newsletter. They claim the date change is because of
Spring Break but April 24th is after the April 3rd Village election, you decide.
Plan on being at the Village Hall on April 24th to let the Board know that
legal gun owners in Northbrook will not tolerate them targeting responsible
gun-owners.
Remember, this all started with Parental Responsibility ordinance, but when
you read the Northbrook March 2001 newsletter (page 8) it's being called
FIREARMS REGULATIONS and Parental Responsibility is NOWHERE to be found in
the new draft. The latest draft of the Firearm Ordinance has the following
main points (Source: Village of Northbrook Newsletter, March 2001 page 8):
 | No one under the age of 18 may possess Any Firearm or Ammunition, and
then only at an indoor range, approved by the Village, under the
supervision of an adult who is a certified instructor. |
 | It will become unlawful for the owner of a firearm to store or leave a
firearm were it is likely that someone under 18 can get access to it. |
 | It will become unlawful for the owner of a firearm to store or leave
it in a motor vehicle, if it's possible for someone else to gain access
to the vehicle. |
 | Furthermore, it will be unlawful to transport a firearm through the
Village unless it's in a "secure, tamper resistant lock box or
container". |
The Board claims that this law mimics the State Law except that the age
limit is raised from 14 to 18, but this ordinance is much more restrictive
than that and is intended to restrict only the law-abiding gun owner. |
This Anti-gun
ordinance is bad news for the legal , responsible gun owners. Our rights are
being taken away from us by a vocal group of anti-gun zealots in the
Village. Call or write the Trustee's and tell them that Northbrook doesn't need another useless
Gun Law that penalties those who have and are currently acting
responsibly.
 | VILLAGE
BOARD OF NORTHBROOK TO DRAFT ANTI-GUN ORDINANCE.
On Tuesday January 16, 2001 the Village Board met to discus the adoption of
far reaching firearms legislation, targeting lawful gun owners.
Their five-point plan includes a backdoor registration of firearms,
requiring gun owners to submit proof to the Village that they have taken a
firearm safety course. Additionally, they would require gun owners and
homeowners to be financially responsible for the illegal use of a gun they
own or posses, when someone else uses a gun in a crime. Furthermore, the
ordinance will requirement that guns be LOCKED while being transported
through the Village. Trigger locks, gun safes and limited access of firearms
to anyone under the age of 18, are also included.
All of the above "Safety" issues they propose are already law in
the Sate of Illinois Safe Neighborhood Act. The Board plans to draft an
ordinance even though their Police Department reprehensive said it could not
be enforced, nor is a current problem.
They plan to hold a March public hearing. This is a perfect opportunity
before the Village Elections to find out were each Board member stands on
the 2nd amendment and make the voice of responsible gun owners
heard. Call or write the
board member TODAY and let them know that you will not accept useless
laws that give them they feeling that they are solving an non-existent
problem. |
