YOUTH CREW LEADER RESPONSIBILITIES AT NORTHERN TIER
- Crew leader is responsible for organizing and planning everything the crew does
Represents the crew in making decisions
Appoints a crew chaplain aide, historian, safety officer/medic, navigator, chef, and an assistant crew leader
Crew leader takes charge of crew upon arrival at Northern Tier
Attends orientation meeting after arrival at Northern Tier
At Northern Tier plans crew itinerary with Charlie Guide based on crew interests and abilities. Crew decides about daily paddling distance, layover days, importance of fishing and swimming, importance of seeing scenic natural features and visiting areas of historical importance, earning the 50-miler award, experiencing Leave No Trace camping, do SCENE Program, etc. Current weather conditions, water levels, and fires also affect itinerary planning.
Prepares a daily duty roster (2-water, wood and fire [if allowed], 2-cooks, 2-dishwashers and clean up -- balance of crew pitches in to help)
Directs camp setup upon arrival at site (everyone secures canoes, paddles and PFDs, stows packs, sets up dining fly, and hangs bear bags) (only when those chores are complete do the assigned persons then get water and firewood and prepare cooking area and supplies/stoves - chef directs meal prep, but is not a cook) (attending to personal needs and tent set up is last)
Assigns daily paddling responsibilities (bow, stern, riding trash [duffer])
Appoints a sweep canoe each day and a sweep person for each portage to check for any dropped gear
Makes sure each canoe has a daypack with items such as water bottles, sunscreen, first aid kit, map, compass, cameras, etc., readily available
Assigns portaging responsibilities
Keeps things running smoothly at all times. Keeps up crew morale.
Assures adherence to Northern Tier/BSA guidelines in all matters
As needed, seeks advice from and expresses any concerns to the lead adult advisor and/or Charlie Guide
Fills out trip reports and miscellaneous paperwork upon return to base camp
