Ric hit the bunk in his cabin hard. Even the thin military-grade matress felt good agaisnt his tired body.
Like Sarganda, he had gone out in his X-wing and looked for any EVA pilots or escape pods. Thankfuly there werent may, and rescue efforts took less than 3 hours. But his head felt like someone had split it with a vibro-hatchet.
He had barely been able to compose a full report to Fleet command. Who says militry protocol droids are worthless. for gettign him through that reprot, he was ready to give his a medal.
In fact, he had also recommended many for acomendation. The wraith pilots, whos names were classified, performed beautfuly.
Likewise did the Black Knights. They were responcible for over 35 enemy fighter kills and 23 surface kills. He wished he could have been in the cockpit of a fighter, any fighter, rather than cooped up on the bridge of a capital ship.
Truth be told, fleet command didnt suit him. Others would no doubt disagree, based on how he took Sarganda with only one Battle Group and suffered less than 2% capital ship losses here at Courscant.
But being on the bridge of a command ship, coordinateling the fight form afar. It just wasn't him. He heeded to be in the front lines, behind the stick, fighting along side his men, not barking orders several Km away.
He had toyed with the idea of leading form his X-wing. Nah, Command would have a bantha if he did that. To dangerous and reckelss they would say. And they were right. The Nr needed Flagg officers now. With the dissaperance of Mitchel Beuller, and the resulting fallout it created, the NR needed good HONEST leaders.
A lot of questionable activity was going on. to many peole had their own agendas it seemed. As much as he hated it, he was needed here. Sometimes duty was a pain in the six.
He looked over at his duty unifrom, hanging over a chair, the rank insignia of ADMIRAL seeming to catch the light coming in form the window. What he would have given to be a commander again.
ADMIRAL, the word almost left a bad taste in his mouth. Why was he suddenly almost HATING his position? Three weeks ago he liberated Sarganda and less than 72 hours ago, he was given a huge number of ships and a mission; to re-takc Courscant.
He thought the idea was a bad one. to devote so many ships on one ultra-short notice operation. He just didnt like it. And now he found out that Corellia had been taken.
Ric had tried to persuade High command that he didnt need this many ships to take courscant. But they felt that by overwhelming the enemy, a quick fairly boodless victory could be achieved.
Ric had his orders, and fleet got their victory.
It was too soon to take Courscant, wiht the events of the past year, the Nr needed to consolidate and re-group, not make a grab for new territory. One could argue that Courscant was a symbol. But a symbol of what? Courscant, after what the empire had doen, was a mare shell of what it was. And it owuld take years and BILLIONS or credits to bring her back to her former glory.
The attack on Corellia had proven that the NR still had powerful enemies out there and the NR can't waste our time worrying about a SYMBOL.
Now Ric felt the anger swelling up in him and he quicky calmed himself. To long, its been too long.
He looked over at the admirals uniform and was really beginning to despise it.
No no, he really dint feel like that; he was just tired. WAY to tired. Maybe it was time to use some of that leave time he had. Heck, maybe he coudl be taken off active duty for awhile. After whe he had done, he figured fleet owend him one, or five.
And maybe he coudl talk Cera into going wiht him, somewhere. LOL. If anyone needed a vacatiom, Cera Teag did.
The more he thought about it the more he liked it. A vacation was what he needed. No more battles, no more fighting for awhile. The NR could get along wihtout him for a month or two. Besides, most of his fleet needed to be repaired and restocked anyway.
He closed his eyes as the last thoughts began forming in his mind as sleep took him over. Yes a vacation was a good idea...
