There were a hundred people, male and female, young and old, from every walk of life, each with their own hopes, dreams, and fears. In the midst of them stood a dark figure, anger so strong it seemed to radiate from him.

The figure looked up.

A change seemed to come over the people around him. Over the sound of conversations and business transactions, the jokes being told and insults being taken, children began screaming in sheer terror. Cries of pain and suffering replaced the sounds of conversation, and around the dark figure, men, women, and children began to fall to the ground, extinguished of life.

The figure stood alone, surrounded by the bodies of a hundred innocents. Eyes aglow with hatred, he cast a final look around him before he turned, darkness wrapping around him like a cloak.

Alicia woke with a start, her pulse racing. Around her, her sheets clung to her skin, damp with perspiration. She took a deep breath and closed her eyes, trying to block out the anger, hate, pain, and suffering that she had seen in her dream.

Jedi don’t dream.

“Are you all right, Lady Marniss?” asked a soft voice from beside the door.

Sitting up, Alicia looked out the window at the buildings, plazas, and parks of the capital, all serene and bathed in moonlight. Sighing, she turned to her gray-skinned Noghri bodyguard.

“I’m fine, Irkhaim, thank you,” said Alicia. “I hope I didn’t disturb you.”

The Noghri shook his head. “Not at all, Lady Marniss. Is there something troubling you?”

Alicia was silent for a moment. “I saw pain and suffering,” she finally said. “I saw people dying, and a dark figure seething with anger and hatred. I fear that something terrible is happening but I don’t know what to do.”

“You are a Jedi,” said the Noghri, his voice firm. “The answer will come to you, Lady Marniss.”

“Thank you, Irkhaim.”

The Noghri touched a knuckle to the floor and bowed his head before turning and withdrawing back into the corridor. Swinging her legs over the side of her bed, she stood up and walked to the window. It seemed to her that the harder she tried to make the galaxy a better place, the more aware of her limitations she became, the more she realized she simply could not right every wrong.

Despair.

Blocking it all from her mind, she went to take a shower and change into fresh clothes. She needed time away from it all, time to meditate and think on everything that had been happening. By the time she returned to her bedroom, she had decided on what to do.
