Sitting in his office within the Imperial Palace on Coruscant, Crev Ardellian, the head of the Coruscant Restoration Project, glanced through the reports sent to him by the many New Republic survey teams that were on inspection tours of the major sections of the planetary city. The survey teams had been made up of mixed groups of urban specialists, engineers from the Engineering Institute on Fondor, as well as New Republic Intelligence personnel. The findings of the survey teams supported the earlier estimate that rebuilding Coruscant to its former glory would take a decade.
Thankfully, Imperial City, with its Palace district and numerous government buildings, had been spared from the brunt of the damage. For the most part, the majestic buildings and towering spires of the capital were still intact and needed only minor repair and ornamental work. If all went as scheduled, most of Imperial City and the surrounding districts would be completed by Restoration Day.
Leaving his office, Crev walked down the corridors of the palace, past droids and artisans, past engineers and architects, and made his way towards the Senate wing to oversee the restoration of the Grand Convocation Chamber of the Senate.
Outside of the Imperial Palace, forty-story construction droids continued their work, destroying ruined buildings, repairing damaged buildings, and constructing new buildings, all according to the encrypted master plans coded into their memories. There was one change to the original plans – one large section of the Palace district was to be left cleared for a special construction project.
The surface of the city, however, was not the only place where action was occurring.
The lower levels of Imperial City were not the typical slums found in the lower levels of other regions of Coruscant. Indeed, Imperial City had a defined lower limit, its sewer levels. This made it far easier for the New Republic scanning teams scattered throughout the city to detect any form of sabotage, or any explosives, biological agents, and the like with their high-powered scanners. Counter-terrorism and anti-sabotage operations were an important part of the Coruscant Restoration Project, as the planet was to again resume its former role as capital of the Republic.
Today, another inspection team had arrived on planet, with some specialized detection droids and high-powered scanners designed for use in highly urbanized environments such as that found on Coruscant. Now, any threat that existed within the City and the surrounding districts could be located quickly, and quietly eliminated.
High up in orbit, the ships of the Third Fleet continued their vigilant patrols around the planet. Since the furious battle that had taken place over Coruscant weeks ago, many of the ships of the Third had been repaired and were again at full battle readiness, as were most of the captured Golan III platforms that survived the battle.
On the surface, all of the shield generators damaged or disabled during the attack were back on line, as were most of the planetary defense batteries. Planetary defenses destroyed were being replaced as funds were made available by the ad hoc Coruscant Restoration oversight committee of the Senate.
Coruscant produced no food, manufactured no material, was the source of no raw materials. Rather, it was a symbol, and it was Crev Ardellian’s task to make sure that Coruscant was a symbol of Republic strength and unity, and not a symbol of its weakness and internal division.
