Two police officers charged over Papua killings
Indonesian prosecutors have charged two senior police officers with human rights
abuses for allegedly allowing their subordinates to torture and kill civilians in Papua
province.
The officers have been named as Brigadier General Johny Wainal and Senior
Commissioner Daud Sihombing.
The charges relate to the December 2000 arrest of dozens of students in the town of
Abepura, over an earlier attack on a police station in which three people died,
including two police.
One student was killed in the police operation, while two others died later in police
custody.
It is also alleged the detained students were beaten and tortured.
The trial is set to take place in a human rights court in South Sulawesi province, at a
date yet to be set.
Prosecutors say both men could face the death penalty if found guilty.
