More paramilitaries sent to Indonesia's troubled Ambon
Another 100 paramilitary police have been sent to the troubled Indonesian city of
Ambon to help disarm the local population of illegal firearms.
The move comes as the death toll from a week of violence between Christian
separatists and Muslims rose to 38.
An 18-year-old man shot in the head by a sniper on Wednesday died from his wounds
overnight at the Al Fatah hospital.
Officials said Ambon remained calm on Sunday with no sound of gunshots from the
troubled areas.
A banned parade by Christian separatists on April 25th sparked off the bloodshed, the
worst of its kind since a February 2002 pact ended three years of religious battles in
which some five-thousand people died.
