Indonesian police warned over Bashir Bali charges
A supporter of jailed Indonesian Islamic cleric, Abu Bakar Bashir, says attempts to
link Bashir to the Bali bombings could spark conflict in the country.
A spokesman for Bashir's Indonesian Mujahideen Council, Fauzan Al Anshori, says if
police charge Bahsir with the 2002 Bali attack, there would be anger within the
Muslim community.
Bashir, 65, is scheduled to be freed from Jakarta's Salemba prison on April 30, after
serving a sentence for immigration offences.
Foreign governments have expressed concern at his immiment release, as most are
convinced that Bashir has important links to the Jemaah Islamiyah terror group.
Police last week said they would use testimony from witnesses detained in the
Philippines, Thailand and Singapore to prove whether Bashir was involved in the Bali
bombings and other terrorist acts.
