Islamic authority decries Bashir detention
Indonesia's main Islamic authority says efforts to keep militant Muslim cleric, Abu
Bakar Bashir, in jail as a terrorism suspect are "an act of injustice."
The secretary general of the Indonesian Council of Muslim Scholars, Din Syamsuddin,
earlier held talks with Bashir's lawyers, who have been seeking support from Muslim
politicians and clerics.
Legal authorities announced last week that Bashir had been formally named a
terrorism suspect, putting his scheduled release from prison on April 30 in doubt.
Bashir was due to be freed after serving a sentence for immigration offences.
An appeal court earlier overturned his conviction for involvement with the
al-Qaeda-linked Jemaah Islamiyah terror group.
