British Embassy in Jakarta to Move for Safety Reasons, AFP
Says
April 23 (Bloomberg) -- The British embassy in Indonesia's capital of Jakarta will move
for various reasons, primarily safety-related, Agence Francce-Presse said, citing
mission spokeswoman Faye Belnis.
The embassy, which has 28 British and 60 local employees, has since the 1960s
been located on Hotel Indonesia circle, a landmark where the Sudirman and Thamrin
main roads join and many demonstrations take place, AFP said.
The embassy is in heavily fortified surroundings, with a shady side-road permanently
closed to vehicular traffic and another road by the circle lined with concrete blocks to
guard against car bombings.
Jakarta has stepped up security and vehicle checks since deadly car bombings in
Bali in October 2002 and in Jakarta in August 2003. Indonesia this month advised its
nationals against travel to the U.K. because of the risk of terrorist acts.
