THE SITUATION IN AMBON/MOLUCCAS – Report No. 428
A CRY FOR HELP - On Masariku network we read the following "Desperate cry for
help from Ambon":
Since April 25th houses and public facilities in Ambon, capital of the province of the
Moluccas, including schools and University campuses are being burnt down. Bombs
and other explosives are being directed to the living quarters of the civilians.
The death toll is increasing and so is the number of the injured. People live in fear
because the armed radicals are left to use violence freely and direct it to any one,
especially to the innocent civilians.
Snipers are active again, killing common people, military and police personnel. Even
children and pregnant women are molested, stabbed or slashed and left to bleed.
All of this is being done under the pretext of fighting the RMS separatists. The
situation will further deteriorate if these acts of violence, which harm innocent civilians,
are not halted immediately. It is in this context that we plead for the international
community's attention to the cause of the innocent people in Ambon:
1. Please help the Indonesian government to immediately put an end to all strife and
violence in the Moluccas Province and also in other Provinces in Indonesia.
2. That law be enforced on the suspected separatists and also on the radicals who
gravely violate human rights in Ambon.
3. That law be enforced exclusively by the government and civilians not be allowed to
take justice in their own hands.
4. That any peace building efforts by the people on provicial and national level be
supported through eliminating any forces which try to obliterate these efforts.
