THE SITUATION IN AMBON/MOLUCCAS – Report No. 422
1. REINFORCEMENTS - Four hundred Brimob Police personnel arrived in Ambon from
Jakarta yesterday, together with a team of doctors.
2. CASUALTIES - Muslim Al Fatah hospital reports that 15 people have died or have
been brought ini dead as a result of the violence. Some 60 people are being treated for
wounds.
At the privately owned Bakti Rahayu hospital five people have died or were brought in
dead (supposedly christians, for the hospital lies in a christian area of Ambon city).
Public Haulussy hospital reports three dead.
3. FLEEING ENDANGERED AREAS - Christian areas that are being threatened have
been evacuated by their residents, notably Mangga Dua, Batugantung, parts of
Mardika and Karang Panjang. We have no data about any threatening towards Muslim
townquarters. There are no mayor attacks underway now, there are only reports on
snipers' activities.
4. RESTRICTED TO AMBON - Up to now there have been no reports about any
spreading of the renewed unrest outside the island of Ambon
