Police arrest three bomb suspects
JAKARTA: The National Police Headquarters announced on Thursday the arrest of
three men allegedly involved in planting a high-explosive bomb in Medan Mall.
The announcement was made only three weeks after the bomb was discovered on
March 9.
The police held the three suspects -- MN, SM and CH -- on Wednesday after they
questioned some 20 witnesses in the incident.
During a press conference at the National Police headquarters, National Police deputy
spokesman Brig. Gen. Soenarko D.A refused to reveal when and where the three
suspects were arrested.
He was also tightlipped on the evidence collected by the police that led to their arrest.
According to Soenarko, all of the suspects will be charged with violating Law No.
15/2003 on terrorism, which carries a maximum sentence of death.
National Police Chief Gen. Da'i Bachtiar said earlier that there were strong indications
that the bomb found at the Medan mall contained C4 plastic explosive.
A bomb package, consisting of five-sticks of M-112 explosives linked to detonators,
was found at the deposit counter of the Macan Yaohan supermarket located on the
mall's second floor.
The bomb failed to explode because the nine batteries connected to a watch with an
alarm and the two detonators were very weak. -- JP
