Ba'asyir's role in Bali bombings unclear: Police
DENPASAR, Bali (JP): The Bali Police have not been able to provide an explanation
of the role of Muslim cleric Abu Bakar Ba'asyir in the Bali bombings, in which more
than 202 people were killed, mostly foreign tourists, and more than 300 others injured,
on Oct. 12, 2002.
"We have not been able to clarify Ba'asyir's specific role in the Bali bombings as he
has not been examined thoroughly," spokesman of the Bali Police Sr. Comr.
Pengasihan Gaut told Antara here on Sunday.
He said that the Bali Police had only received a report that the National Police
Headquarters had stated that Ba'asyir was a suspect of the Bali bombings.
"That's it. On his role as a mastermind of the bombings, we have to conduct a further
examination," he said.
It was reported that the National Police had reached an agreement with Ba'asyir's
legal team to immediately examine the leader of the Indonesian Mujahidin Council
(MMI) in connection with the allegation of his involvement in the Bali bombings.
The examination of Ba'syir would be held in Jakarta next Wednesday (7 April) it was
agreed.
Early in March, the Supreme Court announced that Ba'asyir's prison term for
immigration offenses and forgery would be reduced to one-and-a-half-years. It was his
second legal victory after he was acquitted last November of terrorist charges.
