Police delay questioning Ba'asyir: Lawyer
JAKARTA (Reuters): Indonesian police have postponed plans to interrogate jailed
militant Muslim preacher Abu Bakar Ba'asyir on Wednesday, but still intend to quiz
him as a suspect, a lawyer for the cleric said.
Chief lawyer Mahendradatta said he did not know when police would question Ba'asyir
and had no details on possible charges. Ba'asyir's lawyers have previously said
Ba'asyir would be questioned under Indonesia's anti-terrorism law.
Ba'asyir, 65, is the alleged spiritual leader of the al Qaeda-linked Jamaah Islamiah (JI)
network and is serving time for immigration offences. He is due to be freed on April 30.
"I think it's a technical problem, not a substantial one," said Mahendradatta, referring
to the delay.
Asked about Ba'asyir's status, Mahendradatta said: "He's definitely a suspect."
Police refused to comment.
