Yogyakarta sultan concerned by violence in Ambon, Makassar
YOGYAKARTA (Antara): Yogyakarta Governor Sultan Hamengku Buwono X
expressed concern on Saturday at the recent outbreaks of violence, mainly in Ambon,
Maluku, and Makassar, South Sulawesi.
Reading from a written speech upon the commemoration of Prophet Muhammad's
birthday, the sultan said that violence linked to religion, like that in the two cities,
tended to cause endlessconflict.
He urged people to beware that such incidents had the potential to undermine the
unity of the nation, threatening security and order as well as stability.
He urged people to exercise self-restraint in resolving these matters, so as to avoid
any unnecessary physical conflict.
"Muslims must behave properly by continually improving their intellectual quality and
other capabilities, thereby enabling them to become good citizens," he said.
