JAKARTA: Police interrogated on Monday deported militant Abu Jibril for possible
links to terrorist attacks and a connection with cleric Abu Bakar Ba'asyir, the leader of
Jamaah Islamiyah (JI), the organization held responsible for terrorist attacks across
the country.
"For now, we are charging Abu Jibril with document forgery. The antiterrorism division
is handling the case because it is possible that he is connected with terrorism is
emerging as the interrogation continues. However, we can't determine whether he has
links with Ba'asyir or not at the moment," said National Police spokesman Insp. Gen.
Paiman.
Meanwhile, Akhmad Kholid, one of lawyers representing Jibril, questioned the motive
behind the move to detain his client and the involvement of antiterrorist officers in the
interrogation process, saying that it was clear that police were building a link between
Jibril and Ba'asyir. --JP
