Coup D'état Suspects Brought from Ambon to Jakarta
TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:The National Police brought 11 people alleged to be
involved in the recent rioting in Ambon to the National Police headquarters (HQ) in
Jakarta on Thursday (06/05).
The suspects include Maluku Sovereignty Front (FKM) secretary-general Moses
Tuanakota, the wife of FKM chairman Alex Manuputty, Olli Manuputty and
Manuputty's daughter, Kristina Manuputty.
They are also alleged to be involved in a coup d'état attempt.
The police evacuated them from Maluku Police station at 1pm Eastern Indonesian
Time under the guard of 30 National Police Brigade Mobile personnel.
National Police chief, Gen. Da'i Bachtiar, denied that the police had taken these
suspects as hostages in Jakarta.
He said that the suspects were brought to Jakarta as the questioning conducted at
the Maluku Police was inadequate to be taken to trial.
National Police HQ spokesman, Insp. Gen. Paiman, said that the trial of FKM
members allegedly involved in the coup d'état attempt case was still dependant on a
conductive situation in Ambon, Maluku.
As for the questioning of FKM chairman Alex Manuputty, who is in the USA, Paiman
said that the National Police were still waiting for answers from the US Government.
Paiman added that the police sent a letter to the US Government six months ago and
requested Manuputty's extradition to Indonesia as well as requesting help from
Interpol.
However, there is yet to be any official answer from the US Government as regards
this request.
Security in Ambon has improved despite the recent murder of two Buru island
residents by snipers.
Maluku Governor, Karel Albert Ralahalu, warned people not to be affected by this
incident.
Buru Regent, M. Husni Hentihu, said that there was a third party involved who would
not want there to be safety in the Maluku area.
Laskar Jihad commander, Ja'far Umar Thalib, told Tempo News Room by phone on
Thursday (06/05) that the Laskar Jihad sent a team to Ambon on Monday (03/05) in
order to monitor the situation.
"The team consists of five people, who are experts in the fields of weapons, medicine,
law, communications and socio-politics," stated Thalib. (Martha Warta/Mochtar
