11 Members RMS Charged with Attempted Coup D'État
TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: National Police headquarters (HQ) trans-national and
security first director, Brig. Gen. Aryanto Sutadi, has said that 11 suspects of the
recent Ambon conflict, who are also members of the Maluku Sovereignty Front (FKM)
and the South Maluku Republic (RMS), would be charged with an attempted coup
d'état.
These suspects were considered to have committed separatist acts, initiated a
conflict and celebrated the anniversary of a separatist movement, the RMS, in Ambon
on April 25, that eventually resulting in rioting in the city of Ambon.
Due to the rioting, several people were killed and many others were injured.
"We have arrested these RMS suspects on attempted coup d'état charges," stated
Sutadi.
However, the lawyers of the RMS suspects consider that the arrests were not
according to the law as the hoisting of RMS flags did not violate article 106 of the
Criminal Code on attempted coup d'états.
"The arrest on the suspects was against the law," said Paskalis Pieter, one of the
suspects' lawyers, after meeting with the suspects at the National Police
headquarters (HQ), Jakarta, on Tuesday (11/05).
Pieter also saw discrimination in the handling of this matter as the security personnel
were as yet unable to arrest the snipers in Ambon, who have murdered and injured
many people during the conflict.
"Why can't the security personnel arrest these snipers and take legal action against
them?" asked Pieter. (Martha Warta Silaban-Tempo News Room).
