--"Miaka Yuuki & Yui Hongo, 3rd year junior high school student, finds an old book in the library called THE UNIVERSE OF THE FOUR GODS. The moment she opens the book, both are transported to the mysterious world inside. The book takes place in Ancient China where everything is different from Miaka & Yui's world. When they were transported there two bandits were about to attack them, but luckily a charming young man walked up to them and saved them from trouble. But in return he wants money. Since they are Japanese students they don't have the apropriate payment for him. As Miaka watches him walk away with disappointment, Yui disappears and is back to the modern world. The only thing that her friend Yui can do is sit in the library and read her adventures as the Suzaku no Miko."--
Yui quickly realizes that Miaka is actually experiencing the events she is reading about in the book. She gradually comes to realize that she is magically linked to Miaka, but does not understand why. When she reads about a wound that Miaka suffers, Yui is shocked to discover blood on her own clothing; when Miaka becomes sick, Yui also suffers the fever. Miaka, left alone and not knowing that Yui is back safe in the present, desperately searches for her missing friend. In the process, the young man, named Kishuku So or Tamahome, whom she accuses of kidnapping Yui, once again rescues her. Kishuku So is Tamahome's real name but he goes by the seishi name.
After she flatter Tamahome into helping her find Yui, the emperor’s men capture them when Miaka boldly and stupidly approaches his imperial assemblage asking for some of the emperor's money. In doing so, Miaka trips and falls over the guards while chasing the emperor's coach. But, rather than suffer some dishonorable fate, Miaka is eventually recognized by the emperor, Sai-hi-tei Seishuku of the Konan Country or Hotohori, as Suzaku no Miko, the legendary savior and protectress of the country.
