THE STORY OF SYMPHONY

"Like a book that’s always closed
This is our story never told.
No one’s ever know the secrets of our band..."

At the dawn of the millennium SITS founders Leigh Morris and Brad Myelde both played lead guitar for separate bands. Illfated, (Tom Moberg, Leigh Morris, Sam Thomas, Justin Addie) was an alternative rock band which never really amounted to anything. Detaflli however, (Brad Myelde, Chris Jones, Max Kinglsey) were always praised at school for being the band with the most talent. At each RDHS Variety Show Detaflli reigned supreme over Illfated. The two bands rivalled each other. Leigh Morris and Brad Myelde were not friends.

However, the media spotlight surrounding Detaffli would eventually fade. As graduations took place in 2002 the band was forced to split up. By that time Illfated had broken up too. Everyone had left for college or university except Leigh Morris and Brad Myelde.

September of 2003 marked the beginning of a new school year at Rockland District High School and Leigh and Brad found themselves in a lot of the same classes. The two started talking and by mid October were bringing their acoustic guitars to school to jam in the stairwell. With no intentions of ever forming a band together they invited their friend Danny Belair to sit in on lunch hour jams. At the time Danny was just learning the basics of playing guitar. For weeks the three played together before anyone heard a single sound.

One fateful afternoon in October Leigh, Brad and Danny were heading back to class after writing their first song Hey Pat (Hands on Your Girl). Suddenly a grade nine who had been listening beneath the stairwell called to them. In his girlish, high pitched voice he shouted "Hey Stairwell, you guys rock!" and then he ran away. At that moment the trio knew exactly where they wanted to go. In class they sat down together and discussed possible band names. Building on what the grade nine had already called them they decided to go with Symphony in the Stairwell.

Since then Symphony in the Stairwell have acquired former Detaflli drummer Max Kingsley and have already begun recording their first full length CD. Songs like Standards and Undercover Discovery best illustrate the band’s attempts to be brutally honest while Hey Pat, Aphrodite and Alcohol showcase their catchy, upbeat pop tunes. However, Symphony in the Stairwell is by no means a pop band. They’re an Acruelstic rock band with a kick in the nuts!
