Of course I am still a woman. It’s not only Nick Valensi’s descending “I don’t give a fuck” guitar solo’s and kick ass rhythm’s that I get off on. Have a look at the guy, he’s handsome as all fuck and if you’ve read one interview with him you’ll see he’s pretty funny and knows his shit too. He’s got those eyes that kinda say “I’m a musican, can you help but love me?”, and break me off a piece of that I say. Julian Casablancas is not only a damn good songwriter and top-notch front man, he’s got that fucked-up, rock and roll, “give me a beer, cigarette, guitar and girl and I’m set” aura about him that’s just so goddamn cool and baby I love it. The I-dig-what-I’m-doing, humble, brooding toughness/sincerity that Nikolai Fraiture just oozes does about as good for his wicked bass playing as it does for the ladies (well me anyway) and that’s a shitload of good. The first time I saw a picture of the bobbing-afro bearing, high guitar playing, good-time-guy Albert Hammond Jr. he became my style guru. He’s just so cool, with the whole open to anything, happy as his excited hair, cigarette in the guitar stings going. It’s just so cool. And Fab Moretti’s the kind of ace guy you’d wanna go skinny dipping with in the middle of the night. The kind of fun loving dude you hang out with as to not know what’s going to happen next (like fall out of a bus just off the top of my head). And the hair…my god the hair…
…Yeah, ok, I sound a bit crazy right now. I’ve never met The Strokes but I’ve drawn these wacky conclusions of their personalities from all the hype-spawned articles I’ve read about them, what can I say, I’m creative and like making up characters…it’s what I do. I call it research, not sad, boring, nothing-else-to-do-with-her-time suckage…nooo. But that’s what’s good about them too (not time suckage, the other thing about their personalities). Not only do The Strokes make kick ass music, go about producing it and selling it, without selling out, in a most applause worthy fashion, they seem like pretty cool guys to just have a beer with and talk about what these guys probably talk about best: music. Coz for these 5 crazy kids from New York City that epitomise all I call cool, its all just about making good music, which you gotta have respect for, even if you don’t like their music.
They have cool names, they have an ace band name, they dress like the “70’s and 80’s got mixed in the same laundry hamper” and their hair is so rock and roll its not even funny anymore. But above all and most importantly, it’s all about the music, man.
So that goes partway (I can’t back up that I actually have more to say…buy me a few drinks and we’ll find out though) to explaining my liking of The Strokes but anyway, as Julian Casablancas might say, it’s hard to explain and I’m just way too tired… |
