5:00 pm INTERIOR: SQUAD ROOM John Irvin: [speaking in a low voice] So if I come over after my Salsa-cize class at 7:00 that'll be ok? Andy: [blinking rapidly] Uh, yes, John, that would be perfect. [silence] You're not gonna be in a costume, are ya? John: [looking confused] No, Detective, I'll...change before I come over. Andy: Good, good. [clearing throat] Not that I don't...uh..not that I think.. Ay yi yi...[seeing Connie come out of the locker-room, he says quickly] Never mind. [He jerks his chin up in a gesture of greeting] Andy: Hi, how're ya doing? Everything go ok? Connie: [looks bemused] Yeah, Andy, everything went fine in the locker-room. 7:00 pm CONNIE'S/ANDY'S APARTMENT A knock at the door. Andy answers to find John Irvin wearing jeans and a sweater. Andy is nervously straightening his tie and dressed a little too nicely for a Parent-Teacher Conference. Theo is watching the TV looking grumpy. He doesn't want to be home with the baby even if it means time with John. Andy: Hi John, come on in. Connie: Hi John! Thanks for sitting for us so last minute. John: Hi! No problem, I'm looking forward to taking care of the baby - my nephews are all growing up so fast! Hi Theo (raising his voice a little) Theo: Hi. [quieter] John: Oh, boy. Connie: Yeah. [pointing to sweater] Is it cold out? John: Not really, I just grabbed whatever I had that seemed the most North American. Andy gives him the look. [Connie notices look] What? John: Oh, just a stupid joke. Andy: Uh huh. Connie: Anyways, the conference with Theo's teacher shouldn't take more than an hour or so - I think there's a school tour for the parents. John: [waving his hand in dismissal] Take as much time as you want - I can stay as late as you need me. Connie: [confused] I don't think we'll be back any later than 9:00 -- maybe 9:30 if we stop to pick up some groceries. John: Oh, I'm sure it won't be late just, you know, don't worry about it. He goes over to Theo to try and coax him out of his bad mood. 7:30 INTERIOR: ANDY'S CAR Andy: Well, that wasn't too bad. Connie: Yeah, well, if 2 time-outs can be called a successful half- hour... [silence fills the car] Andy clears his throat Connie: Andy, I really am glad you asked me to go with you to the conference. I just wish you'd told me last week. Andy: Well, you know... Connie [looks to her right] Andy, I think you're missing the turn. That was it back there. Andy doesn't slow the car. Connie: Andy's you better take the next right turn. We're already running late. Andy: Connie, we're not going to the conference. Connie: What? [she's preoccupied - looking ahead for a turn] Andy: The conference is actually next week. I've already got John set to babysit. Connie looks at him in confusion. Andy: We're going out to dinner, just the two of us. [They stop at a red light.] Connie: Oh, Andy. He smiles over at her. Connie: Do you think I'll get a citation if I take off my seatbelt and slide over there. Andy: I'll give you one if you don't. The both laugh as recent tension is released in a big gust. Connie unbuckles her seatbelt and slides over as close as she can. She looks at him with her eyes half-closed and a smile - they kiss - slowly growing in intensity. A car horn rouses them. They break apart -- their eyes saying "Later" as they drive thru the intersection. 9:00 pm - POST-DINNER, IN THE PARKING GARAGE Andy opens the door for Connie, she gets in and, while Andy walks around to the other side. Connie starts to but decides not to put on the seatbelt. Andy gets into the car. Andy turns toward her rather than starting the car. Andy: That was nice. Connie: [still glowing from the special night] Yes.. He picks up her left hand with his right and they instinctively stack their hands together. They look at their hands intertwined. Andy chuckles and says: We look like Little Leaguers figuring out who gets to bat first. Connie laughs and slides even closer. She untangles her left hand and puts it around Andy's shoulders - she lays her head on his shoulder for a moment then she raises her head to look him directly in the eyes. Connie: Andy, we've had so much going on. You know I love you, don't you? That I'm here for the long haul. Andy looks at her intently, his eyes looking over her face. Andy: I know, Connie, I know. His hand caresses her face, from temple to cheekbone to chin, finally resting on her shoulder. As he leans in to kiss her, he whispers: Andy: I know. FADE OUT
