Cut to: Opening Scene An Overcast Monday Morning A Local Financial Institution Connie McDowell walks into a local bank. She is standing in line to make a deposit before going to work. She is on her cell phone talking with PAA John. Connie: “Hi John. Tell Andy I’ll be in shortly. I just need to make a stop here at the bank and…” Suddenly from out of nowhere, a spray of bullets infiltrates the area. Bank patrons fall like toy soldiers. McDowell hits the deck. After checking to make sure she’s not been hit, she crawls behind a counter. PAA John: “Detective McDowell??” John can hear the commotion in the background. Connie: “John, I’m in the bank at the corner of 6th and Avenue C. Bank of New York. There’s a robbery in progress.” As the line goes dead, John runs into the lieutenant’s office. Meanwhile at the bank: Three armed men with sawed off shotguns and masks enter the bank and storm the teller counters. AJ: “Everybody with your hands up!” A guard attempts to disarm the robber. His partner shoots him in the back of the head. The guard falls face first onto the floor in a pool of blood. Mark: “Anybody else??” McDowell pokes her head up from behind the counter and aims at one of the armed men. She hits her target dead on and takes out one of the perps. AJ: “Shit!!!” The perps duck for cover. Mark: “Looks like we got ourselves a hero here, AJ!!” “Whoever you are, drop it!!! Or I’ll start dropping these customers like flies!!” They proceed to fire at will over the counter where McDowell is hiding. McDowell realizes that she’s outnumbered but knows she took out at least one of the perps. AJ: “I said, “Drop it!!” McDowell proceeds to slowly walk out from behind the counter and drops her gun. AJ: “Well, well, well. Look what we have here.” Mark puts his shotgun against her back. Mark: “Start walking pig!” McDowell: “Shut up, asshole!” AJ hits her across the face with the butt of his shotgun and McDowell stumbles to the ground. AJ: “That’ll teach you to keep your mouth shut, you stupid bitch.” Roll opening credits. Scene II Andy and John walk into the squad room. Tony sees them and motions them into his office. Greg, Baldwin and Rita are already in the lieutenant’s office. Junior: “What’s up, Lt.?” And then he glances over and sees Rita visibly upset. Andy: “Where’s Connie?” (with a look of concern). Tony: “She got caught in the crossfire of a bank robbery attempt up on Avenue C. The details are sketchy but she’s all right as far as I know. We know she shot one of the perps but there are still two others and God knows how many other hostages. Andy’s face goes ashen. Tony: “I’m on my way up there now. Andy, you come with me. John and Rita…you check what came down from night watch. Baldwin and Greg. I need you to work your cases. I need at least one thing to go right in this squad room today. Rita: “How am I supposed to work cases? That’s my partner in that bank.” Tony: “Rita, I know you’re worried but you won’t be doing her any good there. I’m serious. Work your cases. It’ll work itself out.” Rita storms out of the squad room. Junior tears after her. Tony: “Andy, the lieutenant from the 8th squad is personally handling this situation. I told him we’d meet him there. I’ll give you a minute. I’ll see you downstairs. John, I’m on the air.” And Tony leaves the squad room. As Junior finishes comforting Rita, Andy walks into the locker room. Junior follows him in. All of a sudden there is a loud crash. It’s the sound of a metal garbage can being thrown against the lockers. Junior: Andy, it’s gonna be alright. Connie can handle herself. They’ll get her out of there. Andy leans against the lockers looking away from Junior. His voice quivers with emotion. Andy: I can’t do this again. I won’t do this again. Not this time. I can’t lose her, John. All this time and I’ve never told her. Junior comes over and puts his arm around Andy. Junior: Andy, she knows. Believe me…she knows. Andy cries a bit into John’s arms and then tries to compose himself. Scene III Tony and Andy pull up in an unmarked car at the bank. The hostage situation has escalated. Inside the bank, the perps have killed two more people and have bound and gagged the remaining hostages and put them into the safe. Connie has a nasty bruise and a severe laceration above her left eye from the butt of the shotgun. Her hands and feet have been tied and her mouth has been gagged. They’ve put her in the stock room by herself with the door locked. Meanwhile, the NYPD SWAT team has arrived and is negotiating the situation. At least three hours have passed. Tony: “What’s going on in there?” Lt. Johnson: “They’ve killed two more hostages but we don’t know who.” Andy: “Great…that’s just great. Meanwhile, we sit here twiddling our thumbs while these assholes might be in there killing even more hostages.” Tony: “Andy, calm down.” Lt.: “Tell your detective he better keep his comments to himself or I’ll remove him from this crime scene.” Andy goes to throw a punch at this lieutenant. Tony has to separate the two. Tony: “Andy, what the hell’s wrong with you. You want me to haul your ass out of here ‘cause that’s exactly what’s gonna happen if you don’t cool it right now!!!” Tony walks Andy over to the curb. Tony: “Andy, I need you to keep your head. I know how hard this is but you’re not doing Connie any good by throwing punches. I mean it…one more outburst and I’ll haul your ass back to the stationhouse. Are we clear??’ Andy: (regaining his composure) Perfectly. Meanwhile…(inside the bank). AJ: “I’ll be back…I’m gonna go check on our little insurance policy in the stock room.” AJ enters the stock room only to find that Connie has disappeared. He closes the door to find Connie hiding behind it with a fire extinguisher. Connie hits the perp over the head and knocks him cold to the ground. She grabs the gun and shoots the other perp in the leg and makes him drop his gun. Just then, the SWAT team storms the bank area with Andy and Tony not far behind. “Don’t shoot.” Connie flashes her shield. Just then she sees Andy out of the corner of her eye. She hobbles over to him. “You’re a sight for sore eyes.” She smiles at him. “Let’s go home. It’s been a long day.” Andy helps her down the steps of the bank as squads of policemen converge on the crime scene. Scene IV Connie and Andy’s apartment. Later that evening. Andy unlocks the door to the apartment. Connie and Andy walk in together. PAA John has been babysitting. Theo rushes over and gives Connie a big hug. Connie crushes him to her chest. Theo: “I missed you Connie. What happened to your forehead?’ Connie: “I missed you too, sweetheart.” She kisses Theo on the forehead. “Well, I had a bit of an accident today but it’s not anything you need to worry about.” PAA John proceeds to leave but not before giving Connie a hug as well. It had been a long day. Connie: “Where’s Michelle??” PAA John: “In her crib, sleeping…Detective.” Connie: “Goodnight John and thank you for everything.” And Connie proceeds to give John a hug goodbye. Connie ventures into her and Andy’s bedroom and there she finds little Michelle asleep. Meanwhile, Andy gets Theo to bed. Andy: “C’mon sport…let’s get to sleep.” And Andy proceeds to get Theo tucked in for the night. He then rejoins Connie in their bedroom. He walks in to find her standing over the crib crying tears of relief. She tries not to let Andy see the tears but he knows they’re there. Andy walks over and puts his arms on her shoulders. Connie leans in against him. Connie: “Andy, I’ve never been so frightened.” And the tears begin anew. Andy wipes away the tears with the back of his hand. Andy: “I’ve lost a lot of people in my life. I almost lost you today. I couldn’t live with that…without you…without telling you… (and Andy begins to break down.) Connie: “Sssshh, Andy, it’s OK. I’m right here. I’m right here.” Andy: “I love you Connie.” He holds onto her for dear life. Connie: “I love you Andy. I love you.” The sudden pressure of her lips was a welcome release. The kiss went on and on. When he pressed his lips against the bandaged temple of her forehead, he felt her shudder. Everywhere he touched, he felt her pulse. She was so giving. That alone was enough to make his head swim. I don’t deserve her. I don’t deserve this. And as he touched and tasted, so did she. He now knew what it was like to be on the verge of madness, and within sight of heaven. She wanted nothing more than what she could find in him. And she was willing to take all that he could give. His touches of tenderness moved her. She knew how hard this was for him to share himself like this. She knew the price he paid. She wanted to take all this pain and hurt away. He loved her. She knew that. It was a constant struggle to battle his inner demons. It was a daily war he waged within himself. But tonight, his control was slipping. He needed her so badly. He’d almost lost her. She was like a soothing balm over his tortured soul. He loved her in so many ways that he didn’t know how to tell her. She hoped tonight that he might finally be able to show her. Tonight, they were together. And that was all that mattered. Two battered souls. They understood there could be no more waiting because life was too precious and time was too short. And madness and heaven became one. The Next Morning Opening Scene: Camera pans across the New York City skyline as the dawn breaks on a new day in the city. Cut to: Interior of Andy and Connie’s Apartment, Andy and Connie’s Bedroom. Pan from shot of baby Michelle’s crib to a close up on the bed of Andy and Connie in bed together. Connie felt as though she could run for miles. Her body was alive with many sensations. Her mind leaped with them. She cuddled next to Andy, tingling with an awareness that radiated down to her toes and fingertips. She lay there under the covers in Andy’s pajama top with the first few buttons undone. She counted his heartbeats as they thudded against her. She smiled. He had his hand laced with hers. She wondered if he was aware of it. Contentment. Was that what he was feeling? She knew that was what she was feeling. It was an inner peace that all would be well now. They could tackle anything together. She could hear Baby Michelle stirring in her crib. Andy began to stir as well. A new day had begun. “Connie?? Is that the baby?” as Andy reached over and kissed her cheek. “Sshhhh, go back to sleep. I’ve got her.” Connie whispered as she kissed his brow. The End
