Part 1

BACKGROUND: A warm spring day in the city. Flowers are starting to bloom, people are getting outside to enjoy themselves after a long
bitter cold winter. The sudden warm weather makes it feel much warmer than it is.

SCENE 1: Squad room. Andy and Jr. are out on a case. Connie is sorting through paperwork, while Rita is talking with a walk-in with
information on vandalism to a nearby church. Baldwin and Greg are walking into the room.

GREG: (placing the radio back into the charger by PAA John's desk) Wow, it's so nice out. I can't believe how warm it is.

PAA JOHN: Detective, you should see my window box of marigolds, they are aflame with color. I love spring - it's a time of rebirth.

GREG: It is, isn't it John. (pondering John's comment as he walks to his desk.)

In walks Katie Sipowicz. She stops at PAA John's desk.

PAA JOHN: (surprised) Mrs. Sipowicz! How are you?

Connie hears John and looks up to see Katie - for the first time. She has always been curious about Katie but never wanted to ask Andy
about her. Now, here she stood just a few feet away. Connie found herself staring and looked away.

KATIE: John, please call me Katie. I'm doing well. How are you? It's been some time since I've been by. Is Andy here by any chance?

GREG: Katie, how are you? It's been a while. You look great! (they hug)

KATIE: Thanks, Greg, good to see you. I stopped by to see Andy, hoping he might be in.

PAA JOHN: Mrs. Sipowicz, I'm sorry, Katie, he's out right now. Would you like to wait (catching a glimpse of Connie watching the conversation) or would you like to leave a message for him?

KATIE: Could you just tell him I stopped by and ask him to call me when he gets a chance. I need to talk to him about something.

PAA JOHN: (writing the information down) I will give him the message the moment he walks in.

KATIE: Thanks, John. I guess I should be going. It was good to see you both again. I was afraid I wouldn't know anyone here anymore.
(she surveys the squad room) But it's nice to see some familiar, friendly faces. Hopefully, it won't be as long before I see you next
time. Bye!

GREG: Yeah, keep in touch.

Connie stands up and starts to walk towards the stairs that Katie is getting ready to walk down. Greg suddenly realizes what John already
noticed, Connie and Katie have never met. She heard them talking to "Mrs. Sipowicz." Connie reaches the landing as Katie is just
beginning to descend the steps.

CONNIE: (haltingly) Katie Sipowicz?

KATIE: (turning) Yes.

CONNIE: Do you have a second? I'd like to speak with you if you have time.

KATIE: (a little confused) I'm sorry, do I know you? (walking back up the steps)

CONNIE: No, we've never met. I'm Connie McDowell. (extending her hand and waiting a beat) I live with Andy and Theo.

KATIE: (A little taken aback) Oh, I didn't know.

Inside the squad room Greg, PAA John and Rita are watching the conversation in the hallway. Baldwin joins them, but he's not aware
of what is happening. Connie turns suddenly and walks back into the squad room. The detectives scurry, not wanting to look as though
they were trying to eavesdrop....but Connie is totally unaware. She grabs her purse from her desk.

CONNIE: (to Rita) I'll be back shortly, ok. (hurried) I'm taking an early lunch.

RITA: Sure, no problem.

CONNIE: (to PAA John) I'll be on radio if you need me.

Connie exits and she and Katie walk down the stairs together. Back in the squad room....

GREG: (shaking his head) I'd love to hear that conversation! "The secrets of Andy Sipowicz"...

BALDWIN: (rolling his eyes) Leave the man alone.

GREG: But you don't know...these are two of the three women who know Andy best. (Looking up.) God rest Sylvia's soul. And let me tell
you Baldwin, Andy's a difficult nut to crack. I've worked with him over a decade...don't know if I could describe him. (shaking his
head)

RITA: (About Katie) She seemed nice.

PAA JOHN: Katie Sipowicz is a sweetheart. Very caring.

The squad falls silent. Jr. and Andy return from the street. Greg bolts back to his desk. Baldwin and Rita chat over by the Lt's
office - while watching Andy and John enter.

PAA JOHN: (to Andy) Detective, I have a message for you.

ANDY: (He waits for a second but John doesn't say anything.) Well, are you going to give it to me? Or do I have to guess what it is?

PAA JOHN: (extending his hand) Here it is.

Andy reads the note and has a somewhat questioning look on his face. He looks around the room. Greg, Rita and Baldwin all look away as he
glances around them.

ANDY: When was this? What time?

PAA JOHN: Just a couple of minutes ago. You just missed her.

ANDY: (realizing Connie isn't there) Where's Connie?

PAA JOHN: She's out but reachable on the radio. (Leaning towards Andy and whispering to him.) I think she left with Mrs. Sipowicz.

ANDY: That's the ex-Mrs. Sipowicz. (he rubs his hand across his forehead...and looks across the desk at Jr.) I think I'm getting a
headache.

JR: Come on Andy, they are both adults. Aren't they? (he says with a sly grin - thinking Andy is overreacting)

ANDY: You've never met Katie. (waits a beat) I'd just rather have been here when they met the first time. Katie can have a way of
twisting herself into places she just shouldn't be.

JR: Andy, it can't be that bad. (waits a beat) I didn't know you and your first wife were in touch.

ANDY: We've talked from time to time. She's in a program too, like me, you know, AA. She had some problems after Andy Jr. died. She
didn't know about Connie.

JR: (with a smirk) No dark Andy secrets going to come out now are they?

ANDY: Don't even go there. (resting his head in his hands) Oh, man, this could just be my own personal jackpot.

JR: Hey, let's go get some lunch. Food always helps everyone feel better - doesn't it?

ANDY: Yeah, I need to get out of here for a while. But I don't know if I can eat....I feel sick.

Jr. and Andy take off for lunch. Life in the squad room returns to it's normal pace.

FADE OUT

SCENE 2: Katie and Connie are seated in a small deli having lunch. It's apparent that they've been chatting for a while and are getting
along famously.

KATIE: Connie, I am so glad Andy has found someone. After Sylvia's death, I was afraid he would never be happy again.

CONNIE: I've heard about that period of his life. Andy doesn't talk about it much. I think It still hurts, a lot. I never met Sylvia,
but I understand she was a wonderful person.

KATIE: She was. I was happy for them. Andy and I were over a long time ago. But he's been a real help to me when I had some problems.
Andy was always there for me, (waiting a beat) after we divorced. And that Theo, I just loved that little boy. But I needed to give Andy
some space, some time to mourn, so I just dropped out sight for a while. Tell me, how's Theo doing?

CONNIE: He's had it tough. But he's doing better now. He's growing so fast. Wait, I think I have some photos in my purse. (reaching
into her bag and retrieving a small photo book. She opens it to show Katie a photo of Theo with Andy.)

KATIE: Oh my goodness. He's grown so much. (she turns the page of the photo book)

CONNIE: (a photo of Theo holding Michelle) That's Michelle. (obvious that Connie has explained her already) Theo is turning into a really
good big brother. He's a good kid.

KATIE: (paging through the book) I can't tell you how good it is to see these photos of Theo. (she comes to a photo of Connie and Andy
hugging and stops at the page)

CONNIE: Theo took some of the pictures in there.

KATIE: (closing the book and handing it back to Connie) I'm glad Andy is happy. (looks at her watch) I don't want to eat and run but
I have to get to my doctor's appointment. Connie, it has been so good to meet you.

CONNIE: You too, Katie. I'm sure Andy will be in touch with you soon.

KATIE: Thanks, I'd appreciate it if he could call me. (the two ladies share a hug) And tell Theo I was asking about him and that I
miss him.

CONNIE: I sure will. Take care Katie.

Katie exits the deli. Connie sits back and sips her coffee. Suddenly her police radio comes to life. A voice, apparently PAA
John, on the other end calls for Detective McDowell.

CONNIE: (into the radio) This is McDowell.

PAA JOHN: Detective McDowell, you need to meet Detective Ortiz at Holy Name Church on 19th and 3rd. This is in regards to a vandalism
case.

CONNIE: I'm on my way.

Connie stands up and leaves some money on the table and then makes her way out of the deli.

FADE OUT

SCENE 3: Late afternoon outside the Holy Name Catholic Church. Ortiz and McDowell are talking with a priest and a parishioner about
the vandalism which has occurred to the stained glass windows. It is still warm out, sun shining bright for a late afternoon.

PRIEST: We are fortunate, I think the paint can be removed from the stained glass windows. Most of our windows have protective coverings
these days....so they can't be broken. Why, tell me, do the people we need to help the most insist on destroying us?

MCDOWELL: I don't think we can answer that father. This church does so much for the community. I can't image why someone would continue
to hit it with this vandalism.

ORTIZ: We'll be in touch. Let us see what we can do. Maybe set up a stake-out for the next couple days.

MCDOWELL: Keeping your church under surveillance might be the best way to catch these people. They seem to be hitting with some
regularity. In the mean time, if you think of anything, anyone with an issue, a problem with the church, please give us a call. (she
hands him her card)

PRIEST: Thank you. And bless you both for your help.

Connie and Rita are walking away from the churches front steps and heading for their respective cars. It's late afternoon and nearing
the time that both detectives would normally be off the job for the day.

CONNIE: If you don't mind, I'm going to call it a day. I'll do the 5's in the morning. Theo's sitter is just a couple blocks away and I
think I'll pick him up and head home. Get an early start on dinner...and laundry. There's a never ending pile of it with the
baby!

RITA: No problem. With this weather, I'm thinking of taking some lost time...We can regroup in the morning and take care of the
paperwork and get started on this case. I'll get one of the sector cars to step up patrols in the area tonight.

CONNIE: (Reaching her car.) Alright, then I'll see you in the morning.

RITA: See you. (Continues on down the street to her car.)

Connie is seated in the car. She gets her cellular phone out of her purse and dials a number.

CONNIE: Hi John, is Andy in the squad?

PAA JOHN: He is. Let me get him for you. (He motions for Andy to pick up line 1.)

ANDY: Sipowicz.

CONNIE: (in a soft voice) Hi, it's me.

ANDY: What's up? Where are you?

CONNIE: I'm over on 19th and 3rd - I'm taking some lost time. Since I'm near Theo's sitter I thought I'd pick him up early. We'll meet
you at home.

ANDY: Sounds good. (sort of getting a nervous look on his face) How's your day been?

CONNIE: Interesting. I'll tell you about it tonight. (changing the subject) Can you believe how warm the weather is? Maybe I'll take
the kids to the park before dinner. If we're not home when you get there stop by the playground.

ANDY: Theo would like that. I'll be home shortly.

CONNIE: Big kiss.

ANDY: Yeah, me too. I'll see you soon.

CONNIE: Bye.

Connie knew Andy wasn't good at expressing his emotions. But she'd knew how he felt. He expressed it in other ways. Andy had actually
become much better since they'd moved in together. Things were going well. She was happy and she was certain Andy was happy too. At
least this time when she'd given him a "Big Kiss" over the phone he had answered back rather than changed the subject! She knew where
they stood as a couple. It had taken a while but she finally knew.

As Connie drives away...
SCENE FADES OUT

SCENE 4: Connie and Theo are walking down the street on their way home after parking the car. Connie has shed her suit jacket and is
carrying Theo's backpack over one shoulder and holding his hand. She still has her hand gun on her belt and her handcuffs in the back of
her pants. It's apparent she's a member of New York's finest.

CONNIE: I was thinking we could go home, change clothes and then go over to the playground after we pick up Michelle. How does that
sound to you?

THEO: GREAT!

CONNIE: How does spaghetti sound for dinner?

THEO: I like spaghetti a lot.

CONNIE: How about we surprise your Dad and pick up a special dessert for tonight. It'll be our surprise...ok?

THEO: Ok. Ice cream? Daddy likes ice cream a lot.

CONNIE: Let's stop in the bakery on the corner and see what they have. Maybe Apple pie...with ice cream?

THEO: YUMMMMY! That sounds good!

Connie and Theo make their way to the corner bakery. As they enter Theo runs towards the back of the shop where shoppers can watch the
kitchen staff decorating cakes, etc. Connie watches him run in and glances over towards the counter to say hello to the clerk.
Immediately, she realizes they have walked into a robbery in progress. Two armed gunmen are having their way with the cash
register while holding an employee at bay with a handgun. One of the gunmen sees her and silently points his handgun towards her. Connie
lets Theo's backpack fall to the floor and raises her hands to cooperate, as if to say I won't cause any problems. Simultaneously
she looks to the back of the store to see where Theo is. Oblivious to the goings on, Theo is looking at the cakes and pies in the
rotating display case. The gunmen finish loading their take in a shopping bag and start to walk toward the doorway. One gunman takes
the store clerk along by the arm as he makes his way to the door. Just as they reach the doorway the gunman holding the clerk notices
Connie's handgun at her waist.

GUNMAN #1: She's got a gun! She's a cop! (He tosses the clerk to the floor and raises his gun.)

Connie attempts to dive for nearby cover while going for her gun.

CONNIE: (screaming loudly) Theo, get down!

What follows seems like it flows in slow motion. Connie dives for an area behind a display counter and is able to fire a couple of shots
at the two robbers as they flee out the door firing shots towards her and the store. Chaos ensues as a couple employees scream as the
shots fly around them. Theo is nowhere to be seen. As the dust settles, Connie is seen laying on the floor of the bakery, behind a
fallen display counter. Blood is seeping through her blouse around the waist and she appears to gasp for breath. A bakery employee
kneels down to see how she is doing.

CONNIE: Theo! Where's Theo? Is he ok?

CLERK: We're calling an ambulance now. Are you a cop?

CONNIE: Yeah, a detective. Oh my God, it hurts. (She tries to sit up but the pain is too much and she falls back to the floor.)
Where's Theo? Theo!

Another bakery clerk walks up holding the hand of Theo. He is fine but obviously scared.

CONNIE: Hey guy, (struggling to breathe) Can you be strong for me? You gotta help me out here and be strong. Can you do that for me?
(coughing as she is visibly in pain but trying not to show it to Theo)

THEO: Ok Connie. Are you going to be ok?

CONNIE: Sure sport. I'm going to be fine. (struggling with the pain and to breathe) I think we need to call your Dad. (she looks at the
bakery clerk) Can you dial 555-3487 and tell Detective Andy Sipowicz what is happening.

CLERK: No problem.

The ambulance crew arrives and prepares Connie for transport to the hospital. There is a fair amount of blood on the floor surrounding
the left side of her body. Theo is standing nearby with one of the bakery clerks who holds his hand. The police are on the scene.

CONNIE: (to a uniformed patrol officer and referring to Theo) I don't want him to see me like this. I don't want to scare him. Have
you reached Detective Andy Sipowicz at the 15th? (Still struggling to breath.)

OFFICER: We've called him. He will probably be at the hospital when you get there. You're going to be fine Detective. (Trying to
reassure her but uncertain of her condition as she appears to still be loosing blood and is having trouble breathing)

CONNIE: (Finally starting to give into the pain. She has tears in her eyes.) This really hurts.

PARAMEDIC: We'll give you something for the pain in just a moment. You ready to go for a ride?

CONNIE: (turns to the uniformed officer) Can you take care of Theo? Get him to his father. Please.

Theo and an officer start to walk out behind the stretcher, towards the ambulance. Police officers are everywhere. The paramedics stop
for a moment before placing Connie in the back of the ambulance. Connie motions to Theo to come closer.

CONNIE: You go with the officer. He'll take you to your Dad. Be brave for me, ok.

THEO: (He's been crying a little.) OK, Connie.

The stretcher is placed into the ambulance and speeds away to the hospital. Theo goes with the officer to his patrol car and they head
off towards the hospital - in search of Andy. The crowd outside the bakery starts to disperse. A police officer is seen placing the
crime scene tape around the entrance.

FADE OUT

SCENE 5: Hospital Emergency Room. Andy rushes up to the entrance with lights and siren blaring. He jumps out of the car and runs
towards the entrance. He is visibly very shaken. Several police officers are in the waiting area - word is out - a member of the
force has been shot.

ANDY: (to the admitting nurse) Detective McDowell. Where is she?

NURSE: The ambulance hasn't arrived yet. Should be here any moment.

A television news crew arrives on the scene about the same time as the ambulance. The paramedics rush Connie into the Emergency Room
area. Andy rushes to her side. The tv crew starts to film and Andy aggressively pushes them out of the way. The police officers in the
waiting area form a makeshift blue wall between Andy and the tv camera.

ANDY: (leaning over Connie, holding her hand) Connie. (He can't seem to get any more words out. This is seeming all too familiar to
him.)

CONNIE: (Tears are running down her cheeks. She's still in pain even though they paramedics gave her something to help on the ride
over.) It hurts, it really hurts. Andy, I don't want to die.

ANDY: (feeling totally helpless...he wants to do something...but feels totally helpless...) You are not going to die. You're going to
be ok. You're going to be ok. (repeating himself as if he has to hear it over and over to reassure himself)

CONNIE: (struggling to get her breath) I'm scared. I've never felt pain like this before.

Staff starts to appear and begin to check Connie's vital statistics. They look worried and decision is made to take her to the operating
room immediately. Andy is in shock. He's taking it all in but can't react to what is going on around him. Jr., the Lt. and Rita have
arrived in the ER and are standing with Andy. A doctor walks over to talk to Andy.

DOCTOR: Detective we're going to be taking her up to the Operating Room now. She's lost a lot of blood and we need to determine where
the bullets have lodged and get them out. We think one may have pierced the lung - causing her breathing difficulty. As soon as I can
I'll be out to give you a report on how the surgery has gone.

ANDY: She's going to be ok, isn't she?

DOCTOR: I'll be out to talk to you as soon as I can. We need to move her now.

Andy goes to Connie's side before the stretcher is rolled away.

ANDY: (Whispering into her ear.) You're going to be ok. I'll be waiting for you right here.

CONNIE: (Andy is stroking her forehead.) Take care of Michelle and Theo. Tell them I love them. (she waits a beat) I love you.

A nurse places an oxygen mask over her face and the stretcher is rolled onto the elevator. Andy turns to the waiting area and with a
sudden burst he picks up a chair and throws it at the wall breaking a lamp. He has to release his anger some how and this is the only way
he can see to do so right now. Jr. walks over and places his arm on Andy's shoulder. Andy pulls away. Jr. quietly says something to
Andy and he turns to see Theo walking in with a officer. Theo runs over to his Dad, who picks him up and gives him a big hug.

ANDY: You ok?

THEO: I'm ok. Connie told me to be brave. I'm brave.

ANDY: Yeah, you are. You are brave, Theo.

FADE OUT

Part 2
SCENE 6

It is late that same evening...or is it early the next morning.
The hours have blurred together...time has stood still. Andy is seated by himself in a nearby waiting area.
He's shut out everyone around him - Jr., Rita, the Lt., Greg and Baldwin are all nearby, but Andy doesn't want
to talk to them. PAA John came by and has taken Theo to Andy and Connie's apartment. Andy called the sitter
and asked if Michelle could stay the night. Andy was taking care of matters...he didn't need any help from the others.
But he did need the doctor to step out and give him an update on Connie. Why was it taking so long? This couldn't be good.

RITA: (Walking over to Andy.) Andy, you want me to get you some coffee or something?

ANDY: (Shaking his head.) No.

RITA: (Kneeling down by Andy and in a quiet voice.) She's going to be ok. She has way too much to live for. She's a fighter,
you know that, we all know that.

ANDY: (He looks away from Rita.) I don't want any coffee.

Jr. joins Rita and they walk down the hall to pick up some coffee for the themselves and the others. It's very quiet.
The elevator doors open down the hallway and the light from the elevator catches Andy's attention. A doctor walks out of
the elevator and speaks with a nurse. The nurse points the doctor towards Andy. The doctor looks tired. His hospital scrubs
have several large blotches of blood on them -which Andy can't seem to take his eyes off. He spots Andy and walks in his direction.
Andy meets him halfway.

DOCTOR: Mr. Sipowicz, I'm Dr. Strahan. I performed the surgery on Connie. Why don't we talk over here. (Gesturing towards a waiting area.)

ANDY: (Slightly agitated, but not at the doctor.) Doc, just tell me here.

DOCTOR: I'd rather we sit down. Let's go over here.

The Lt. walks over to join them but Andy pushes him away. Andy and the doctor sit down in the waiting area.

DOCTOR: The surgery went well. Connie is in recovery now. We'll probably be moving her to a room in an hour or so if she progresses
like we think she will. One of the bullets pierced her left lung. The lung collapsed. That's why she was having such a difficult time breathing
when she came in. We've repaired the damage but she's on a respirator for now to help regulate her breathing. We should be able to take her
off the respirator before we move her to the room. The other two bullets lodged in her lower abdomen. We were able to extract them...they didn't
do any real damage to any organs, just the loss of blood.

ANDY: (Rubbing his hand on his face, looking a little relieved.) So, she's going to be fine, is that what you're saying?

DOCTOR: Andy, she should be just fine...we are talking about a period of recovery. We'll see how she comes along. But she did suffer
some other problems as a result of the damage the bullets caused. (The doctor's pager goes off.) Nothing time can't heal. (He waits a beat and...)
I have to get back to the OR. I'll stop by the room and talk to you and Connie later today.

ANDY: Yeah, sure. Can I see her?

DOCTOR: I'll have a nurse let you know when she is in a room. She'll be out of it for a while, she needs the rest. Her body has suffered a blow.
(Looking around the lobby at all the police officers.) I'd like to keep the room as quiet as possible.

ANDY: Don't worry, I'll take care of that.

The doctor heads back to the OR. The Lt., Rita and John join Andy. Greg and Baldwin are standing nearby.

ANDY: (His body is there, his mind is not.) She's going to be ok. She's in Recovery, on a respirator. She got hit in the left lung. They're going to move her to
a room soon. (He looks at the Lt., Andy is seething.) I want to get my hands on this guy. You've got to let me have 5 minutes with him.

LT: Andy, we'll get him. You stay here and be with Connie. We're going to play this by the book. This guy will fry - he shot a cop.

ANDY: (looking at Jr. and Rita) 5 minutes. That's all I'll need. And I'll save the state millions in keeping this asshole alive.

LT. We'll take care of this. You take care of Connie. (Looking at the other detectives.) We need to get back to the squad. Andy, call if you need anything. I mean it.

ANDY: (the words are coming out, but his thoughts are elsewhere.) Yeah, I will.

The detectives start heading out - all giving Andy a show of support by a hug or a touch on the shoulder. Jr. is the last to say something to him before heading off.

JR. Rita and I'll be back later. You call us for anything, you hear me?

ANDY: You have to keep me up to date on this case. I need to know what's going on.

JR: I will.

ANDY: (He grabs Jr.'s arm.) Do you understand? I want to be there when that guy is taken in. We'll need to have a little talk.

JR: I hear you Andy. I'll do what I can.

Jr. walks off to meet up with Rita and head over to the squad. Andy sits down and glances at his watch. Waiting, something he's never been too good at.

FADE OUT

SCENE 7

Connie has been moved from Recovery and is in a private hospital room. She is sleeping. She's been sleeping for hours... Several machines make various
sounds around her bed. Andy is seated beside the bed and is holding Connie's hand. He is watching her face, watching her breathing, every breath. This is
just seeming all too familiar to Andy. He never had this opportunity when Sylvia was shot. She was taken from him much too quickly. He loved Sylvia - He would
always love Sylvia. He would always keep a very special place in his heart for her memory. He watched Theo every day and saw little bits of Sylvia in him, although
Theo didn't remember his Mom. Theo thought of Connie as his Mom. Andy's love for Connie was quite different than his love for Sylvia. Connie was someone he admired
at work. She could more than hold her own. His admiration grew as their friendship grew. Connie had been there when he needed someone. Andy had been there
when she needed someone. Out of their friendship and admiration grew a special relationship, one that was now love, no matter how it started, love had blossomed for
both of them. Andy had a difficult time expressing his emotions...he always had. But that was changing with Connie. Maybe he felt more comfortable in his own skin these days.
For the first time in his life, Andy was actually thinking about the future. He could envision growing old with Connie, the two of them with Theo and Michelle...maybe someplace
warm, maybe retirement in Florida, eventually, watching the kids grow up. Andy stood up and moved Connie's hair back from her face. She looked so peaceful, so calm as she
was sleeping. He walked around the room, looking out the window, glancing at the machines making their music.

CONNIE: (very low, just above a whisper..her voice is raspy from the breathing tube that had been in her throat.) Andy.....

ANDY: (turning quickly and walking to the side of the bed.) Hi there. How ya feeling?

CONNIE: (trying to make a joke...) Better than you look. You look tired.

ANDY: (Sits next to the bed and takes Connie's hand.) The doctor said you're going to be ok.

CONNIE: (still trying to lighten Andy up a little...) Just ok?

Andy breaks a little smile and kisses her hand. He's not saying much....he's trying to pull himself together for Connie. Inside, he's a wreck.

CONNIE: Theo, is he ok? I was so afraid he was going to get hit.

ANDY: He's fine. John is at the apartment with him. Michelle is at the sitters. (He waits a moment, unsure how to bring this up.) Connie, we're lucky. (a second passes)
If I get my hands on the scumbag responsible for this I'll be sure he never does this to anyone again. (He's getting tears in his eyes.) I thought I was going to loose you.

CONNIE: Andy, come here, come close.

Andy stands and leans over close to Connie.

CONNIE: (a few tears fall from her eyes and...in a whisper...) I've told you, I'm not going anywhere. (She waits a beat.) I love you, Andy Sipowicz.

ANDY: I love you too. (He kisses her gently on the lips.)

Andy sits back in the chair and holds Connie's hand, stroking her hand as he looks around the room. No more words need to be said. A nurse comes in and checks her signs.
In walks the doctor who performed the surgery.

DOCTOR: (Looking over the vitals the nurse has just written down.) Detective McDowell, how are you doing?

CONNIE: I've been better, but I'm not going to complain. I'm breathing aren't I.

DOCTOR: I'm glad you are here Andy. I didn't have a chance to finish our conversation earlier. (Andy looks concerned.) Connie, you took a hit to the left lung and your lung collapsed.
We were able to repair that damage but you might notice some discomfort in your breathing for the next week or so. It'll subside over time. The other two bullets hit you in the lower abdomen.
You were lucky, they didn't do any major damage. We did have a problem with the blood loss. We weren't able to save the fetus.

Both Connie and Andy are stunned. Speechless. The room is silent.

CONNIE: (confused...maybe she didn't understand, maybe it was the morphine affecting her ...)That's not possible. I was told I couldn't have children. The doctor told me...

DOCTOR: You might want to see another doctor. You were about 5 weeks along. (waiting a beat) I'm assuming you didn't know then....it was pretty early on in the pregnancy.

ANDY: (taking it all in...) No, we didn't.

DOCTOR: With your blood loss your body couldn't handle it. But I see no reason why you two couldn't have a baby in the future....give yourself some time to heal first. After you're back on
your feet, make an appointment with your OB-GYN. (He realizes he's talking but neither Connie or Andy is really paying much attention. They are too stunned by this news.) Connie, you get some rest.
I'll be back by tomorrow and check in on you. (He exits the room.)

CONNIE: (tears well up in her eyes) Oh my God. How could this happen? I don't understand.

ANDY: When you get out of here we'll go to your doctor. We'll get this figured out. The doctor said you should be able to get pregnant again.

CONNIE: I can't believe it. (quietly) I was pregnant with your child. Andy, nothing would make me happier. I never allowed myself to think about that happening, it just wasn't a possibility.

Connie closes her eyes as tears fall down her face. Andy leans over and gives her a kiss on the cheek - as if to kiss away the tears.

ANDY: Why don't you get some rest. I'll be right here. I'm not leaving.

CONNIE: (quietly) Yeah..

Andy sits back in the chair and continues to stroke Connie's hand. She turns her head to the side and quietly cries as she falls asleep.

The scene fades out.

Part 3

SCENE 8

It's been 4 days since Connie was shot. Andy has been dividing his time between the hospital and the squad room. He's been determined to be kept up to date on the search for the person responsible for shooting Connie. He's tired, but he's not about to let it deter him in being in the loop. Additionally, he's been taking care of Theo and Michelle at night - he doesn't want any help, even though PAA John and others have offered.

It's late afternoon and Greg, Baldwin and Rita are preparing for a night-time stake out the church where the vandalism has been taking place. Jr. and Andy are at their desks doing paperwork. Andy is nursing his 5th or 6th cup of coffee of the day.

LT: Andy, why don't you get out of here. Get some rest. You've had a long week.

ANDY: I'm in tonight if you need me. I need to keep working.

LT: And if you need some time off - take it. You're not doing any of us any good if your mind is somewhere else.

Across the room the stake-out group is making plans where to meet up and what time to be at the church.

GREG: I'll pick up the van and meet you downstairs at 8:00. Anyone want to get some dinner before we head out?

BALDWIN: I'll pass. I'm going to get a run in before we meet up.

JR: (walking over to join the group) You guys need another body, I'm in. (Looking at Rita.) I don't have any plans tonight.

RITA: Great. You can join me in the church sanctuary.

JR: (grinning) We got a date.

The phone rings and PAA John takes the call.

PAA JOHN: How are you Detective McDowell? It's so good to hear your voice. (waits a beat) He is. One second. (Looking towards Andy.) Detective, it's for you.

ANDY: (Having heard John say it was Connie.) Hey. What's up? (waits a beat - and has a relieved look on his face) That's great. What time? Ok, I'll see you shortly. (After hanging up, Andy walks to the Lt.'s office and knocks on the door. He's got a little more spring in his step. He's found his energy reserve.)

LT: What's up?

ANDY: Connie just called. The doctor's released her. She's good to go home this afternoon.

LT: Great. I'm sure she'll be glad to get out of the hospital.

ANDY: I'm going to put in for the next couple days off. You know, make the transition at home easier.

LT: I think that sounds like a good idea. Connie needs anything, you let us know.

ANDY: I'll call in. And if you need me back here, call me.

LT: Don't worry about us.

Andy goes back to his desk and informs the group of Connie's release from the hospital. His work is done for the day and he starts gathering his jacket and items to head over to the hospital. Before he leaves...

ANDY: (to Jr.) I'm taking a couple days off. You call me if anything develops with Connie's shooter. You hear me?

JR: If anything comes up, I'll make the call.

SCENE 9

The door to Andy and Connie's apartment opens. Andy walks in and puts down a small overnight bag and turns his attentions to Connie as she makes her way into the apartment. She's moving a little slower than usual.

ANDY: Why don't you sit down and rest.

CONNIE: I'm ok. (walking gingerly towards the sofa) Don't worry about me. (looking around the apartment) It's good to be home.

ANDY: (from the kitchen) You want something to drink? (opening the refrigerator) We've got soda, milk, apple juice. I could run out and get something else...

CONNIE: I don't need anything to drink, I'm fine for now.

ANDY: (walking towards the bedroom - nervously) You want me to get you a pillow? a blanket?

CONNIE: You know what I need? I need you to come over here and sit down. You're tiring me out running around here. I'm fine

Andy comes over and sits next to Connie on the sofa. She snuggles up to him, resting her head on his chest.

CONNIE: This is what I've missed the most.

ANDY: (placing his arm around her) Does this hurt? I don't want to hurt you.

CONNIE: (giving him a caring smile) I'm fine. I'm not going to break. (taking a deep breath) This quiet is nice. (with a smile and a little laugh) We never have quiet like this around here - at least when we are both home.

Both Connie and Andy are looking relaxed on the sofa - Connie's glad to be home. Andy is exhausted from the schedule he's kept over the past week. He's also happy that Connie is back home - with him.

ANDY: The quiet is nice. We need it more often. (glances at his watch) I have to pick up Theo and Michelle from the sitters in a little while.

CONNIE: I've missed them both so much. (taking a deep breath and closing her eyes while resting her head on Andy's chest) I can't wait to see them.

ANDY: While I'm out I can pick up anything you need. You want...

Connie lifts her head up and places her index finger on Andy's lips - quieting him for the moment and calming his jittery nerves at having Connie home from the hospital.

CONNIE: (whispering) Relax. This is all I want right now. (gently giving him a kiss on the lips) You are all I need - you hear me?

Andy nods his head and kisses Connie's forehead. The two snuggle a little closer and relax back onto the sofa. Enjoying the solitude of two.

SCENE 10

Middle of the night. Our detectives on stake out have been successful in apprehending the person responsible for vandalizing the Holy Name Church - a schizophrenic who formerly lived in the church's homeless shelter. Greg and Baldwin are arranging transport of the suspect by a sector car. Jr. and Rita are wrapping up at the scene.

JR: (to Rita) You want to try to get some sleep before we head back to do the paperwork?

RITA: I'm afraid if I stop now I won't get up for hours.

A patrol officer walks up and quietly calls Rita aside. Jr. watches.

OFFICER: You'd Detective McDowell's partner right?

RITA: I am. Why?

OFFICER: My brother works the 38th. I just heard from him they think they might have the suspect in her shooting.

RITA: (motioning for Jr. to join her) Where's he at?

OFFICER: They've still got him on the scene of another robbery - a 24 hour bodega, just off York on 67th. (quietly looking around) You want me to tell them you guys are on your way?

JR: Yeah, thanks man.

OFFICER: Don't mention it.

JR: I'm calling Andy.

RITA: You sure that's a good idea?

JR: Yes, I do. He needs to know.

FADE to...

SCENE 11

Middle of the night. The McDowell/Sipowicz apartment is dark and quiet. Andy is in a deep sleep - the first he's had in a week. Suddenly the phone's ring wakes him.

ANDY: (still waking himself enough to speak) Hello.

Andy glances over to the other side of the bed and realizes Connie isn't there. He looks around the room but doesn't see her anywhere. A dream? A nightmare? What's happening?

ANDY: What, what did you say? (listening to Jr. on the other end of the phone) I'll meet you there. I'm on my way. And John, don't let them take him in till I get there.

Andy bounds out of bed. Right now he's more concerned at locating Connie than heading out to have a "conversation" with this skel. He throws on pants and a sweatshirt, stuffs his feet in some shoes he finds in the dark - then walks out into the living room. Connie is seated on the sofa with Michelle, sleeping in her arms. Andy stops at the doorway and looks over at Connie and Michelle. With a little light coming in through the window, they look like a beautiful vision. How could anyone try to take this away from him?

CONNIE: (smiling at Andy) She was restless. I didn't want to wake you.

ANDY: (calming a bit, sitting next to them) You shouldn't lift her. The doctor said nothing heavy.

CONNIE: I'm ok. She's not too heavy. (waiting a beat) Who called at this hour?

ANDY: (uncomfortable) I gotta step out for a few. You gonna be ok?

CONNIE: (a little concerned) I'm fine. Who was it?

ANDY: It was John. I gotta go meet him.

CONNIE: Is there a problem? Is he ok?

ANDY: (getting up from the sofa) Yeah, he's fine. I won't be too long. You can page me if anything comes up before I get back. (he walks over to Theo's room and glances in)

CONNIE: Theo's fine. I just checked on him. (slowly getting up from the sofa, returning Michelle to her child carrier on the coffee table) Andy, what's going on?

ANDY: You trust me?

CONNIE: Of course.

ANDY: Then you don't want to know.

CONNIE: (facing Andy, very close, knowingly) Did they arrest someone?

ANDY: Maybe

CONNIE: Be careful.

ANDY: I will. (He leans forward to give her kiss on the forehead and turns to leave.)

CONNIE: (looking upwards she says softly) Watch over him.

Connie walks over and looks in on the sleeping Theo. She then goes back and sits back on the sofa and watches as Michelle sleeps peacefully. Only then does she relax back on the sofa. No more sleep tonight. She'll be waiting for Andy's return.

SCENE 12

The dimly lit bodega. A handful of patrol officers are talking in the entrance and on the sidewalk. A couple officers talk to the bodega owner by the cash register. Andy pulls up in his car and quickly walks up to the door. The street cops know who he is. Andy has a bit of a reputation that they've heard about. They respect him...they would want a chance to "chat" with the person who shot their loved one if this happened to them....they clear the way to the door. John meets Andy at the door.

ANDY: Where is he?

JR: In the back. (grabbing Andy's shoulder as he heads off to the back of the bodega) He's admitted to shooting Connie.

Silently Andy heads off to the rear of the bodega. He looks like a raging bull. He gets to the rear stock room of the store and is greeted by 3 uniformed officers who have been "watching" the guy. They see Andy and they back away. The guy stands up as if to challenge Andy.

PERP: (smart ass) OK, now can we go to the station? Is this who we've been waiting for? (he's obviously drunk or high) Can we get out of this hell hole now?

ANDY: Yeah, pal. I'm the person you've been waiting for.

Andy grabs the guy by the shoulders and picks him up, pinning him to the wall. He knees him twice in the crotch and drops the guy to the floor -and is grasping to regain his breath. The perp starts to get to his feet and Andy grabs him by the arm...

ANDY: Don't run from me...(throwing the guy down, hard, against the floor)

PERP: (looking up from the floor) Who the hell are YOU?

ANDY: I'm the wrong person to mess with pal. (nudging the guy with his foot) You shouldn't have shot that cop in the bakery. You made a big mistake. (looking around the room to see who is there) She was pregnant with my child. (Picking up the guy by the arm.) You killed my unborn child, you asshole. (looking around again) I said, don't try to run on me...

Andy throws a couple of punches to the guys chest and stomach before John steps in to stop him. The uniformed officers step back into the stock room from the hallway. The perp is on his knees, holding his stomach. He suddenly lunges at Andy and hits him in the head. The officers step in and grab him up quickly. John pulls Andy off the guy.

ANDY: (quietly - but in the perps face- BIG TIME) If I ever see you near my family again I'll personally tear you apart with my bare hands - piece by piece. You hear me?

The guy isn't answering. Andy looks at him for a long time - then turns to leave. He glances over at the officers in the room and nods to them. A silent thank you.

ANDY: Get this piece of shit out of here. (Then spits at the guys face.) He's not worth my time.

Andy and John walk out of the bodega. Andy is just realizing he has a small cut/bruise to his right cheek. He wipes away the blood. They make it to the sidewalk before speaking.

JR: (looking at the cut on his cheek) You ok?

ANDY: I'm fine. (looking around) This is over. We don't need to talk about it anymore. You understand?

JR: It's over. (looking around) I didn't know Connie was pregnant. I'm sorry Andy.

ANDY: We don't need that to go any further. You got it? It's between you and me...and it's doesn't go further. Got it?

JR: Got it. Go home Andy. Be with your family.

Andy and John start to shake hands and share a brief hug. Silently Andy walks off to his car as the uniforms bring out their suspect and place him in the back of a patrol car. John is talking with some of the uniformed officers.

FADE OUT

SCENE 13

It's breakfast time. Theo is eating cereal and watching cartoons. Michelle is seated in her carrier on the coffee table near Theo. Theo is trying to make her smile by tickling her feet. Connie is in the kitchen making coffee. She hears the key in the door. Andy enters. Theo turns to look.

THEO: Hi Daddy.

ANDY: Hey sport. Isn't it time for you to go to school??

THEO: (rolling his eyes) yes

CONNIE: (touching Andy's cut/bruise) You ok?

ANDY: I'm fine. You should be sitting down, resting.

CONNIE: (quietly) Is he in custody?

ANDY: Yeah. Tried to rob a bodega in the 38th.

CONNIE: (lightly touching the cut) You sure you're ok?

ANDY: It's nothing. I'm fine.

CONNIE: (touching the cut) You're going to have a little scar.

The doorbell rings. Andy opens the door to find a little kid standing there.

BRANDON: Is Theo ready?

ANDY: (looking at Theo) Theo, someone's here for you.

THEO: Hi Brandon. (grabbing his backpack)

ANDY: Whoa, wait a minute. Brandon, is your mom with you?

BRANDON: She's downstairs waiting for me.

ANDY: ok, Theo, have a good day at school.

Theo rolls his eyes at Andy.

ANDY: Theo, come here. (Andy kneels down and gives Theo a hug.) See you tonight son.

THEO: Bye Daddy, Bye Connie...(running off with his friend, Andy closes the door.)

ANDY: Looks like Theo has made a new friend.

CONNIE: I told you he'd settle into the new school. (walking back to the kitchen) You want something to eat? Coffee?

ANDY: (looking at Connie) You know what I need? I need some sleep.

CONNIE: (playful smile) How about if I join you?

ANDY: Sounds nice. I like that. (Giving Connie a hug.)

Andy picks up the sleeping Michelle in her carrier and heads towards the bedroom. Connie is putting some things away in the kitchen.

CONNIE: Hey Andy, I forgot to tell you something. I met Katie, the day I was shot. She stopped by the squad looking for you.

ANDY: (comes out of the bedroom) How'd that go?

CONNIE: She was very sweet.

ANDY: yeah, sweet.

CONNIE: Did you get in touch with her? She said she needed to talk to you. (walking over to Andy in the living room) Should I be jealous? (she says with a smile)

ANDY: She met someone. She's getting married. I'm happy for her. She deserves to be happy.

CONNIE: (Giving Andy a hug.) You make me happy. (They share a kiss.) Let's go to bed.

ANDY: Come on...(taking Connie's hand and they walk off to the bedroom.)
