Whakatane win Bay Championship
Whakatane took an unassailable lead in Bay Division One with one round of games left to play on Saturday. Goals from Dave Gillies, Chris Daniels and player coach Werner Rechsteiner sealed a 3-0 win over neighbours Edgecumbe Plains Raiders to place Whakatane five points ahead of second placed Otumoetai FC. In Rotorua Otumoetai defeated Rotorua Suburbs 5-0 thanks to the second hat=trick in two weeks from striker Craig Wadsworth, a lovely left footer from Glen Morris and a penalty from Steve Kean. The win moves Otumoetai up to second spot for the first time this season after Tauranga City United made god on their threat to help decide the Championship by knocking Te Puke out of contention, Tauranga won 4-1 at their Links Ave ground. Elsewhere Kawerau moved back into the top half after downing Rotorua City 2-0.

In Bay Two an 85th minute penalty by Wayne Stewart sealed three points for Opotiki against Ngongotaha to keep up the pressure on Otumoetai SR who defeated Taupo 4-0 away from home. Continuing a good weekend for Otumoetai, their Bay Two Raiders side continued their recent good form by defeating strugglers Greerton 2-0 to move up the table thanks to two goals from Jeremy Blake. Tauranga Boys College kept up their chances of a late bid for winning the division by winning their sixth game in a row, over Tauranga City United 2-0, as did Whakatane who defeated Papamoa 4-0.

Otumoetai's Bethlehem College side have pulled off a remarkable first season in the league, in defeating Tauranga college rivals Tauranga Boys College 4-3 they have won Bay Division Three at the first attempt. The win places them on a now unassailable 31 points. Old Blues who looked so strong for most of the season were defeated for the second week in a row on Saturday by bottom-placed Kawerau in the surprise result of the week. The race is now on for second place between Old Blues and Rotorua Boys High School. Rotorua Boys High School took control in their match against Papamoa after being held 2-2 at half time to win by a whopping 8-2. To add injury to insult one of Papamoa's players left the field with a broken leg, not a nice way to finish the season.

In the ladies competition Whakatane continue their undefeated season by defeating Kawerau 3-1, and their neighbours Whakatane High stay right on their heels with a big 6-1 win over Taupo thanks in part to a hat-trick from Laura Rushworth, Chanelle Frew replying for Taupo. Otumoetai continued their good second season in the competition by defeating Tauranga City United A 4-3. In the bottom half of the ladies competition Kahukura maintain their hold on the top spot defeating Te Puke 4-1, debutants Opotiki move up to third spot after defeating Ngongotaha 1-0 in a mirror of the two clubs men's fixture of the day before. Goals from Laura Johnson (2), Hayley Hoogendyk (2), Nicki Broughton, Jo Maua Maua, and Clare McQueen helped Tauranga City United B continue their strong end of season run with a 7-0 win over Whakatane B.
