GLOSSARY OF FLAG TERMS

ACHIEVEMENT OF ARMS -
A combination of
armorial symbols, including SHIELD, SUPPORTERS, and CREST, also known as COAT
OF ARMS. APPLIQUED -
A method of
manufacturing a flag in which one or more pieces of cloth are sewn (stitched)
onto the FIELD to form the design. As opposed to printed or dyed designs.
Also appliqué. ARGENT-
In heraldry, the
metal silver, often reproduced as white. ARMIGEROUS FLAG -
A flag which
incorporates either a portion or a complete ACHIEVEMENT OF ARMS as part of
its design. More generally, any flag which incorporates an heraldic design. ARMORIAL -
Relating or
pertaining to arms. ARMORIAL BANNER -
A flag whose
FIELD is comprised of the SHIELD from an ACHIEVEMENT OF ARMS. ARMS -
The design and
symbols used in heraldry. Based on the decoration used by mediaeval lords and
knights. Technically “arms” refers only to the designs, or CHARGES, placed
upon the SHIELD. ASTRAL CROWN -
A crown contrived
from wings and used to represent an air force. |
