GLOSSARY
|
Is an emblem or design,
usually on the fly of a flag. DIFFERENCE or DIFFERENCING
-
To create a new flag by
adding to or modifying another flag. This can be done by changing one or more
colours, adding or removing a charge, etc. A flag is usually differenced to
indicate a continuing legal, cultural, historical, or geographical, tie to the
former flag. Examples include the flag of the United States, which was
derived from that of the British East India Company. DIPPING -
A method of saluting using a
hand-held flag. The flag is lowered laterally so as to be almost horizontal,
then raised swiftly to its original position. Most countries permit flags to
trail on the ground when being dipped. However the United Stated flag code
states that the flag of the United States may not touch on the ground when
being dipped. See also TRAILING. DISTINGUISHING FLAG -
A flag authorized to be flown
by an individual to denote rank, command, office, or other authority. It is
only permitted to be flown whilst the individual holds the relevant office or
command, as it denotes the official authority of the person rather than their
personal status. Double Seal -
A flag which reads correctly from either sides.
Required the design to be sewn to both sides. Double Thickness -
Two single flags sewn back-to-back. The doubles the
flags weight and affects its usability and wearing quality. Not recommended
for use on outdoor flag poles, but sometimes used for flags displayed
indoors. |
