To understand BadFic, let's start with something
X-Files-ish, say...iced tea.
If good Fan Fiction were iced tea, it would be served up with just the
right touch of lemon and sweetener in solid lead crystal goblets with
perfect water droplets condensing and sliding down the sides in rivulets
to pool neatly in fancy coasters.
If good BadFic were iced tea, it might be kind of shoved in your face in
a dirty paper cup with "crystal goblet" hand-lettered on the
outside; or it might be fresh-brewed from fragrant leaves but loaded
with enough sugar to rot your teeth and enough lemon to strip the enamel
off them; or it might not even be iced tea, it might be root beer
instead!
If you take your X-Files very seriously, and demand total respect for
and moral rectitude from your Mulder and Scully, then you may find that
BadFic is just not your cup of...iced tea. Turn back now--go find
yourself some traditional angsty or smutty fan fiction, or maybe one
with a good case file and perfect characterization.
But if your boundaries of fun are a bit more loose, then read on. Good
BadFic seizes on the predictable characteristics of not only our
favorite heroes, but also of the fan fiction genre itself, and makes
them unpredictable: mixes them, flips them, exaggerates them, turns them
inside out, and twists them (often in very naughty ways). If your sense
of humor will allow you to enjoy such an experience, then plunge ahead!
