Random Musical Connections 1
photo

Welcome to the first round proper (as Henry Kelly would have said) of Random Musical Connections - the game that more than nods its head to Luke Rhinehart.

The idea, for the uninitiated, started here.  Since posting that entry I have been thinking of ways to enhance the idea.  As a result of my deliberation I have decided to try and find a connection between the track, creating a musical journey of sorts.

Since last pressing the random button my CD collection has grown considerably with the back catalogue of Now! That's What I Call Music 1-58 being added (which had been amazingly burned onto 2 DVDs in MP3 format).  However, for the purposes of this game, these tracks will not be eligable, as I do not believe they would give a true representation of the music which sits in my CD collection.

So that you can enjoy the delights of the music at home, I have also managed to create a link to the music  - I think you'll be able to access the tracks by right-clicking and opening the page in a new window - please let me know if this works or not.

So, enough chat - let's fire up the Random Music Generator...

Starting Track: Coldplay - Don't Panic

New Track: 6339:  REM - I Don't Sleep, I Dream from the album Monster

I have to admit that Monster is not the most listened to CD by REM that I have, though on its second listen this track is starting to grow on me.  I quite like the sudden ending - I can imagine DJs across the land jumping up to mike at the end of the track.

And now it's time for the...

Random Musical Connection:

Quite a simple one to start off - both acts performed in Live 8 in 2005 in Hyde Park.

I bet not every connection will be as straight forward as that one.  I'll try and do another one of these next week.  If you can think of a better connection between the tracks, please leave a comment and let me know if you can access the music.

Lyrics are what interest me, and here we have two that run a similar path - despite on first listening - being nothing alike at all.

By the way, the link for "Fix You" leads to a MP3 of "Don't Panic".
But - Don't Panic, I know both of them.

Both these relate to sleep and "lurve".

And both deal with the uncertainty of being in a relationship, and both strongly hint that the cure for what ails 'em is - some old fashioned lovin'.

The starting point for each is identical.

"Monster" is actually quite underrated. I can recommend another listen.

Curiously, you've pre-empted me slightly as I have a blog about lyrics lined up for tomorrow. Although bad ones in this case.

I must start by issuing an enormous apology - the first track selected was Don't Panic - I don't know why on earth I wrote Fix You in the entry. I'm cross with myself now.

I have changed the blog entry, but feel really guilty as you've put so much effort into this comment, which I found really interesting and went off to listen to Fix You.

I had noted from your blasts that lyrics were a major interest of yours - I tend to judge a song more on the melody and only really 'tune into the lyrics' after hearing a song many times.

I'm just converting Monster into MP3 for some further listening in the car tomorrow.

With it's almost non-stop furious tempo, it may not be the kind of album that promotes sensible driving...

In fact, on the rare occasions when I do drive, I can't listen to anything other than classical, lest my foot become nailed to the floor...

Thanks for the recommendation - I have really been enjoying the album this week - once again demonstrating the power of the random record selection. As for the sensible driving...maybe next week.
