Road to Ruin ![]() I love a good conspiracy theory - did we really land on the moon, is Paul McCartney dead, who shot JFK and what really happened that night with Lady Di? So imagine my joy when I discovered a new theory last week. Apparently it's been out a little while, so please accept my apologies if you've heard it all before. The rumour goes that Pete Doherty is an invention dreamed up by the KLF. Apparently they found an obscure Buddy Holly impersonator in a holiday camp in Devon and planned to exhibit the "frailties of our celebrity-obsessed culture". Rumours of ficticious Libertines gigs were leaked in the hope that the press, desperate not to miss "the next big thing" started to claim they had been there at the start. To add to the frenzy, scandals such as the break-in of his group member's house, were planned to propel Doherty onto the front pages of the tabloids. Then, the Kate Moss fiasco erupted, which was not planned and Pete began to believe his own hype, went off the rails even further and split company from Drummond and Cauty of the KLF before they could complete the final stage of their experiment. The whole story can be read here. As always with these theories, I desperately hope that it turns out to be true. Going on past form, it's the sort of thing one may expect from the KLF. 2006-05-03 17:10:10 GMT

Wouldn't it be remarkable if it was true... |
