This recycling bin sits at the filling station in Franz Joseph. It was one of the best ones I've seen so far, and I simply had to take a picture. You know how it is. Recycling isn't as visible here as you'd think, knowing how people in Britain rave about NZ's record. Where I live, in Lyall Bay, most people seem to put out green kerbside boxes. (These cost $10 and can be had from local libraries). Rubbish bags cost $13 for ten (which most people seem to find expensive), and rubbish isn't picked up unless packaged in one of these. There is also only one rubbish collection a week, on the same day as the recycling. There are fairly few public sites - can recycling at my local supermarket seems to work pretty much like cash-for-cans - there is a sign with a weekly two-hour slot when cans are bought. There are clothing bins, and small indoor bins for cans and plastic at some superstores, but I haven't seen any large public sites like we have in Edinburgh. Over and out from your Special Agent in Wellington. |
