Love Birds are very cool little birds which originally come from Africa. They are dwarf parrots, and very colourful! The most commonly found species is the Peachfaced Love Bird. The Peachfaced love birds has many mutations, and is the largest of the Love Birds. Also commonly available on the market are the Masked & Fischer's Love Birds. There are nine known species of the Love Bird, all of which are from the genus Agapornis. There has been some confusion on what can be classified as a love bird. For instance, the Parrotlet was once considered by many people a Love Bird, even though it wasn't even from the same continent.
Love birds usually live to be 15-25 years old, but there have been some known to grow well into their late 30's. With proper care, love birds can be very nice, intelligent & beautiful pets.
Although Love Birds are not known for their speaking ability, they make up for the fact that they are otherwise very vocal creatures. Sometimes, if trained very carefully, a Love Bird can be taught a Wolf Whistle, a few words or maybe a simple around-the-house sound (e.g. I heard of a Love Bird once who imitated the kettle's whistle).
Love birds are very intelligent. I think I may have to reinforce my cage's door, as Obo has already figured out how to open the door, he just hasn't been able to do it yet. But he has attempted! This after only living in the cage for four days. He caught on quite quickly:0)
Love Birds are also quite acrobatic. Their antics are near to mind boggling, as the swing from one perch to another, execute funny little summersaults in mid-air, and hang from their cage rood upside down. They are entertaining to watch, and even more to play with.
Love Birds are quite affectionate, and in my experience, love to cuddle. Obo makes little nests in my hair and falls asleep while I read the Harry Potter series for the gazillionth time. Once properly bonded, they make very close companions, and great best friends.
