What is Gundam Wing?
"Gundam Wing" is an epic saga that takes place in the year AC (After Colony) 195. In this distant future, Earth has spawned several colonies which exist independently. For decades, while the Earth's surface was wracked with war and civil strife, the peace and quiet of the space colonies presented an attractive alternative for war-weary settlers.
When the terrestrial wars ended, a new world government was established, a 'United Earth Sphere Alliance' committed to bringing about peace through force of arms. In the name of peace and justice, the Alliance seized control of the colonies. However, there were still people fighting for Earth's autonomy. After nearly two decades of oppression, a network of rebels based in the colonies decided to strike back at the puppet Alliance.
Using the super-strong armor material 'Gundanium', scientists constract advanced mobile battle suits known as Gundams, entrusting them to five young, highly trained pilots. In an attempt to stop the tyranny of the Alliance, these pilots are sent to Earth to wage guerrilla warefare in a project known as 'Operation Meteor'. However, once the Gundams land on Earth, they get more than they bargained for. The Alliance has been taken over by a secret internal organization known as 'OZ', lead by the charismatic Treize Khushrenada and his right hand man, Zechs Merchise. OZ has plans for both Earth and the colonies, and they don't include the Gundam pilots.
Why Gundam Wing?
If you know me, you are familiar with my obsession with robots. I think it all started with the show Transformers and continued with the likes of Astroboy, Gobots, Voltron, The Mighty Orbots, He-Man, and ofcourse, Thundercats. I got into anime my freshmen year in college, when a good friend first introduced me to the humor of Ranma 1/2. I only watched comedy anime until that fateful day when I first experienced Neon Genesis Evangelion, an epic series about war, love, and humanity. I found it to be deeply moving and the animation was beautiful. That was when I started to get into all kinds of anime.
