Day 15 Thoughts |

The Ministry of Education, which is a branch of the national government has developed a plan to reform (change) education in Japan. Many of the proposed changes are geared at addressing problems the Japanese have noticed in their society and other changes are geared at preparing for the challenges that lie ahead in the 21st century. Although Japanese students traditionally score high on international standardized test in math and science, many in Japan feel that their students are not creative thinkers who readily apply their knowledge to new situations. For this reason, changes are being considered in curriculum development that would foster the growth of independent, creative thinkers. To address this concern, the Japanese are planning on implementing a more integrated curriculum, a differentiated curriculum which considers the needs of the brighter students, the struggling students and the average students, and selection of students to universities is to consider not only test scores but special talents and grades in high school, as well. The Ministry of Education is also concerned with the emotional health of individuals. They are concerned with the high rate of suicide in Japan, the growing drop-out rates, and problematic behaviors of children. -Recently, there have been a number of disturbing actions taken by high school students which have shocked their nation. To address this concern the government wishes to foster a "zest for living" in children and a reduction of stress. Therefore, they are planning on decreasing the school week from a 6 days/week to 5 days/week. Which will lead to a more careful selection of curriculum content, as Japan has a national curriculum which means Ministry of Education sets the curriculum for all grade levels for all schools throughout the nation. Parents are to receive information on addressing children's emotional needs, communities are to be better prepared to offer supports for children and families, and teachers are to receive training to better prepare them to help children. |
