Day 2 Thoughts

I met 11 other teachers in the lobby of our hotel this morning at 3:35 to take a trip to the Tsukiji fish market.  We took 3 cabs for this 13 min. drive costing us 440 yen or $4.40 each - total per cab was 1760 yen.  The Tsukigi fish market it one of the largest in the world. When we arrived it was bustling with energy.  We saw people cutting fish, deshelling sea creatures, cutting ice and then shredding it in a giant machine, preparing presentations, weighing and pricing the fish.  We also encountered hundreds of carts and trucks loaded with fish packed in styrofoam containers.  We had to walk with great caution as the drivers were in a rush and there were no rules for traffic flow. Almost every worker was wearing high boots as the floors were wet and slippery. Thousands of workers began their jobs before the sun rose.

The warehouse was full of rows of stalls which formed indoor streets for the carts and trucks.
