Day 5 Thoughts

Several teacher took the subway to the Tokyo Dome for a baseball game this evening. Both the subway and the stadium dome were sparkling clean and as quiet as a library, except for the bleachers. Those fans were such serious hooters and hollerers that each team's bleacher section had its own conductor who led the small wind instrument sections and the fans in organized songs, cheers and flag waving choruses. We, however, astounded the subdued fans that surrounded us when we attempted to do the wave and danced to YMCA. Again, I was amazed at the amount of English present in the Japanese culture. Several American songs were sung by the fans. Also, the team names were written in English on the uniforms. Because we look very different than the Japanese we attract a great deal of attention, especially from children. They love to approach us and try out what they have learned in their English lessons. They also love to have their pictures taken with us, and, like many of you, they often put up the peace sign. Even the giant, pink bird mascot was attracted to our group. - I will be going to Kyoto for the next two days and will not add to the website until I return.
