The Paco MuniPage

So, you're curious about mountain unicycling, eh? Well, I can't blame you. After all, it's my favorite hobby in the world. On this site, I hope you will be able to find all the information you need to get started. Of course, there is much more than I can teach you. So that's why I'll include every good link I can find as well. Sound good? All right. Then let's get started!

1. Introduction
Mountain Unicycling is a relatively new and uncommon sport which boasts the challenge and thrill of mountain biking and the good-natured fun of normal unicycling. Basically, mountain unicycling (also called municycling) consists of two parts:
1. Straining every muscle in your body, trying to get up steep hills, while still requiring excellent balance and concentration to avoid little pebbles and roots which will cause you to fall off while your muni goes rolling down trail, or (if you're unlucky) a steep cliff face.
2. Going down steep hills at extremely stupid speeds* (for a unicyclist) while still requiring excellent balance and concentration to avoid hitting little pebbles or roots which will cause you to roll down the trail or (if you're unlucky) off a steep cliff face.
*From what I've read, it seems that some municyclists prefer to skip the extremely stupid speed part, but for me, this requires too much leg strength that I just spent on the ride uphill, so riding fast is much easier.
Parts 1 and 2 are done alternately with breaks to do numerous activities such as:
a. Stopping to rest your weary bum, because you WILL be saddle sore.
b. Resting your leg muscles who hate you and are about to go on strike.
c. Retrieving your muni which just fell off the cliff and/or pulling yourself up the cliff.

Scared yet? Or does this sound like loads of fun? If you're anything like me, you're probably itching to go try this right now. If not, maybe you should read on a little bit, and see if I can't convince you.

2. Advantages of mountain unicycling over mountain biking
Don't get me wrong. There are lots of good-natured mountain bikers out there who are into their sport for the fun of it. But there are also those mountain bikers whose sole purpose in life seems to be to prove that they are better than you because they can pass you. Municyclists don't seem to face this type of animosity because of the simple fact that there are very few of us. Finding a fellow muni enthusiast is so rare that when you do meet one, you instantly become best friends. That, and the fact that it's so unusual to meet another one that it severely limits the chance of being passed by one.
Another reason I prefer municycling is that it doesn't take much of a trail to be absolutely thrilling. Give me a mile-long stretch of moderately difficult hiking trail, and I'm as giddy as a schoolboy. Mountain bikers, on the other hand, usually try and find something a little larger to thrill them (like a whole mountain).
And then you get to the attention thing. It's one of the coolest things in the world to pass a group of hikers who stand there amazed to see some crazy guy on a unicycle fly by. You can bet they'll be telling their friends about that one!

3. Advantages of municycling over unicycling
This reason is entirely personal. I just find mountain unicycling much more fun than normal unicycling. Once you get to a certain level of proficiency on a normal uni, the thrill is no longer if you can ride, but what you can do. For some reason, this emphasis on tricks doesn't seem to appeal to me. Probably because of the practice it requires...
There's just something to be said about you and the unicycle working together to conquer some obstacle, be it a steep hill, a rocky slope, or some sharp curve in the trail. Many times, you fall, but when you make it, it is the biggest adrenaline rush I know.
