February's Dance was not as crowded as January by a long shot. I wonder what we have to do to reach that happy medium. We had only 44 people in attendance, which is about 20 short of, break even. It was one of those laid back evenings and those in attendance seemed to enjoy themselves. Bill and Norma taught two line dances that are performed to waltz music.

APRIL DANCE

The April Dance is our anniversary dance. We are 4 years old and still growing, slowly, but growing.

It will be a potluck affair so bring your favorite dish for others to share and enjoy.

We are also going to raffle off a pair of handmade Indian dolls to help increase the treasury. Raffle tickets will be $1.00 a ticket or 6 for $5.00.

Make sure you plan to attend this dance and pass along the info to others. Lets try to have as many of our members there as possible. Bring some new folks as well.

ELECTIONS

The Elections are scheduled for the fall of this year and as you may know several of our officers have decided not to continue. This means we will need to get a nominating committee together very soon to find replacements. If you would be willing to serve on a nominating committee please see one of the board members.

See the last page for a copy of the bylaws which lists the duties of the elected officers. The duties of the committee directors seem self explanatory.

The current board members are:

Is there a dance you want to learn? Please let us know. Even though we have signed up the instructors the dances they will teach haven't been selected. We can give them your requests. Or maybe you would be willing to teach a dance in addition to the scheduled ones.

CHILDRENS HOSPITAL BENEFIT

The Northern Virginia Country Western Dance Association's Benefit dance was a success and while I don't know the exact numbers, they have now raised about $110,000.00 for the hospital since they started doing this about 15 years ago.

O T H E R P L A C E S

Know of a good place to dance on those nights that SM isn't having one?? Here are a few we have tried.
Dean & Dawn
Cherry Hill Campground on Wednesday nights. Admission is $8.00 per person and it includes two lessons, beginner and intermediate. Also included are soft drinks and munchies. They do one style of dance per month and sell a tape at the end for $10.00. They are great teachers. The floor is wood and there are a lot of good dancers. They call two step, waltz, cha cha hustle and east and west coast swing. There are no line dances. Dean plays a mixture of music. They always have a good crowd of friendly people.

Fred & Ro
IBEW hall near BWI Airport on Friday nights.
Admission is $8.00 and includes a line dance or couples lesson.
Also included are beer, coffee, tea and cokes, diet and regular.
Fred keeps the dances moving and sometimes has three line dances
going while keeping the outside clear for couples dances.
They focus on line dances but he also calls traditional and new
 couples dances.
His music covers a very wide range from traditional CW to the
 latest Hip Hop.
Fred is a friendly guy and is always circulating and talking to
people. He DJ's with a remote mike while Ro cues the CD's.
They have a really good crowd.

Norm the DJ
Saturday night in Ocean City Maryland at the American Legion Hall on 24th Street. 7-11 PM.
This one is not exactly nearby but if you are in the area you should stop in.
He plays all requests and there is no set admission price,
he has a tip bucket by the door.

MARCH BOARD MEETING

This is a brief listing of some of the items discussed at the board meeting. If you are interested in all the details you are invited to attend the meetings and hear it first hand.

February's dance was attended by 34 members and 10 non-members. We signed up one new member at the dance. Membership renewal postcards have been sent out.

Our website has received 576 'hits'.

A new batch of white Tee shirts will be ordered. We couldn't take advantage of the discounted lower price unless we ordered 72 of the things, so we opted for a smaller amount at slightly higher price.

We have collected $44.00 so far for the raffle of the two dolls. We will raffle them off at the April dance.

We decided to put up a sign up sheet to see how many people would be interested in a picnic this year. Last years picnic had a slim attendance.

Bill Cole volunteered to repair the Fire Department's sign. Seems the letters are falling off.

SMCWDA will have a table at the Charles County Recreation Day event. Bob Curran did a video at the last dance and at Bill Cole's dance workshop. He and Rachael will also pass out a packet of information about our association.

The next Board meeting will be April 17th at the firehouse at 5:00 PM.

Remember: members are always welcome.
