Norwegian Astronomical Society has by the end of the century 1350 members,
of which about 15% are females. Approximately 80% are occupied with
reading and studying astronomy, while the rest observe and study.
Among the observing members two have discovered a
comet, Olaf Hassel (in 1939) and Knut Aarseth (1989). In addition,
Olav Hassel (1960) and Sigurd Einbu (1912) have made
discoveries of novae.
The last discoveries this century was made by Odd Trondal who discovered
a supernova in the galaxy Mrk 881 ( 4.April 1999 ) and a nova in M31
( 31. October 2000 ).
The NAS have several observing sections. The Variable Star
Section, the Meteor Section, Extragalactc Supernova Search
Section, Comet Section, Gamma-Ray Burst Section, Lunar Occultation Section
and Double Star Section. Each group is asked to submit reports
about their activities to "Astronomi", the
Society's members magazine.
