Little League or Big League
I found an article that kind of disturbs me. As of the end of 2005, Little League Baseball received $19.2 million dollars. They have $62.6 million in cash reserves. No one knows yet how much the Non-profit organization will make off the television revenues from this years Little League World Series, but it is estimated to be more than last year.
This makes me wonder if LLB Inc. is in a position where they can give even more children the opportunity to play either baseball or softball. Especially, since, LLB Inc. has been earning revenue from licensing products such as: energy bars and chocolate chip cookies. In 2005, LLB Inc spent $17.4million. That means they added another $1.8million to their reserves. Now, I am not saying that Little League Baseball needs to spend all their reserves. After all, they are not assured of continuation of revenues at this level, but they could easily stop charging fees for leagues in the poorest areas of the world. LLB Inc. charges $75.00 for each team that enters district tourneyments. They also charges for accident insurance for every league. Little League Baseball Inc. needs to remember that they are a not-for-profit organization. Having such a huge cash reserve does not benefit the children of the world. Giving all the children around the world access to an activity such as baseball or softball would be a better use of the proceeds from televising the Little League World Series. 2006-08-29 16:27:47 GMT
