What is War?
"Hizbollah fired more rockets into Israel on Wednesday than on any previous day of the 22-day-old war, after helicopter-borne commandos attacked guerrilla targets in Israel's deepest raid into Lebanon." Full Story
Can what is going on between Hizbollah and Israel really be called a war? According to M-W.Com 1 a (1) : a state of usually open and declared armed hostile conflict between states or nations (2) : a period of such armed conflict (3) : STATE OF WAR b : the art or science of warfare c (1) obsolete : weapons and equipment for war (2) archaic : soldiers armed and equipped for war 2 a : a state of hostility, conflict, or antagonism b : a struggle or competition between opposing forces or for a particular end <a class war> <a war against disease> c : VARIANCE, ODDS 3 - war·less According to the first definition, it can not be a war because Hizbollah is not a state or a nation, but if you use the second definintion, it would be called a war. But given that Hizbollah and Israel have been trading shots back and forth for years, it certianly would not be a war of 22 days. It would be a war of approximately 23 years. That is when Hizbollah was forme to battle Israel in southern Lebanon during the Lebanese Civil War. It think that this would be called an increase in hostility. The same I have stated above in regards to Hizboolah would also apply to Palestinians except for the length of their war. Now, what is the War on Terror? How does it apply to this definition? How long has the War on Terror really been going on? What is the difference between the War on Terror and Freedom Fighters? These are questions that I still contemplate their exact meanings. Maybe I can write down my mental arguments someday in the future. 2006-08-02 17:08:15 GMT
